Neat
Just curious, which kind of artstyle that inspired your artwork? Is it from a series or an artist?
I have various artists that inspire/influence me, I often pick and pull from different ones over very specific things. Like, say I like the way Hirose does toning, or I like the nice thin and clean lines you see in the work of Frank Frazetta, I like the dynamic poses that Yusuke Murata does in OPM, or the cityspaces in the work of Oh Great!, or how Daiskuke Ishiwatari designs gnarly-looking characters for Guilty Gear, or the way Kr0n and Zeronis draw eyes for girls, etc...
I'm always looking at the work of others, and if I find something I like, and feel would suit my style, I try to learn from it, and incorporate it into my work.
Most of my influences are Asian though, yeah. However, when it comes to painting, I tend to lean more toward western artists, especially the great masters.
I just feel that when it comes to comics/manga, and animation, Japan is unrivaled. In many ways, I feel that Japan are the ones who truly carried on the spirit of Walt Disney when it comes to animation, pushing the boundaries of the medium and what defines it, compared to what modern Disney has done to 2D animation.
Good luck with that, remember, My Hero Academia's creator started out at winning a contest in one Shounen Jump manga artwork contest.
Also be aware that Shounen tends to close those manga series that don't do well... which makes sense but kind of sad...
Thanks!
I'm aware of how SJ works, I've read Bakuman. That's why we're not aiming to just win, but to rival some of the best stuff currently on the magazine.
Hm.. I like your idea.
And yeah, the bottom left 2nd is Yoko from Gurren Laggan, watched it a couple of months ago, and oh man it was sooooo goood.
Your Yoko sketch is marvelous too. No bluffing at all. I would like to see you draw Nia though.
Thanks. Yeah TTGL is easily in my top 10 favorite anime. Not cause it's super amazing or anything like that, but because the themes of the story really resonated with me. It's actually where my username comes from.
It's amazing how you've come along, and that first page is especially gorgeous! Really impressive, looks entirely professional.
Best of luck on the Jump contest, getting in would be huge~
Also, BRS was my first avi on here (that I can remember) ^_^
Thanks!
I feel fairly confident we can win, especially after looking at all the current entries and the winner of the past contest (none of them are any good tbh). That said, anything could happen, so I don't wanna count the chickens before they hatch. Who knows, some Korean or Chinese genius might just crop up during the last few months with some amazing entry. Still we have a lot going for us, especially since it's a team effort between me and Che.
Either way, win or lose, we'll still push forward with this, and find our way into the Japanese market, I think that's the key to success with this. And if Jump holding a contest toward global audiences for the very first time ever tells us anything, it's that the Japanese anime/manga industry is opening up more and more to the west. Which = opportunity.
