Add Professor Layton to C-list his games are very popular on the handheld and has a chance of getting in.
He's third party. We're not discussing third parties.
I'd personally make these changes to the tier list in the OP:

1. Move Pokemon from B tier to A tier. If we're talking about popularity then Pokemon comes very close to Mario. The games are popular amongst 'non gamers' (the sort of people who only play games occasionally), average gamers and hardcore gamers. It features a fanbase as obsessive as you can get, any new games released fly off the shelves, it's enjoyed by a wide age group (little kids to grown adults) and the words 'Pokemon' and 'Pikachu' are household names.

2. Move Animal Crossing up to C tier. It's an extremely popular series that gets raved over. The games are loved by casual gamers, hardcore gamers and everything in the between. It's grown into one of Nintendo's popular series, it's just that it only gets one release per system because of the nature of the games.

3. Move Game & Watch up to at least E tier, if not D. I feel the series is being extremely underestimated here. Game & Watch isn't just some random and obscure thing Nintendo made 20 years ago, it's are one of the most important things Nintendo's ever done, it's the origin of portable gaming. Because of how important and iconic the Game & Watch line is it's extremely loved and appreciated by retro gamers. Also G&W still have an impact on the games Nintendo produce today, just look at the upcoming Wario Ware game - Game & Wario.

4. Maybe move Golden Sun down to E tier. I feel it's as esoteric as Mother, F-Zero and Punch-Out. I think it's the the only series in the D tier not to be somewhat popular in the mainstream.

If we're looking for other Nintendo series to add then I'd recommend:

1. Puzzle League - D tier. It's Nintendo's biggest puzzle series aside from Dr. Mario. It continues to get games released for the series which are fairly popular amongst casual gamers. The series itself is highly respected by fans of puzzle games.

2. Wars (aka Advance Wars) - E tier. It's loved by a lot of Nintendo fans and is critically acclaimed, however it doesn't have much mainstream fame or popularity.

3. StarTropics - F tier. The series has a fair few fans. You could say it has a 'cult following' but that following isn't anywhere near as substantial as that of the likes of Mother and F-Zero. The series would probably be a lot more popular if it wasn't released so late into the NES's lifespan.

4. The Legendary Starfy - E tier. Has built up reasonable popularity since the series got an international release.

5. Sin and Punishment - E tier. When the original game was released on the Virtual Console it got quite the cult following which was so considerable that it earned a sequel. Since then the series has gotten only more popular.

6. Custom Robo - E tier. Only two games have been released internationally, which didn't sell well and weren't praised highly by critics, but there exists a decent number of people out there who really love the series.

7. Super Smash Bros. - C tier. A immensely popular series with a huge hardcore fanbase.

8. Chibi-Robo - F tier. One reasonably popular and acclaimed game, a second game that nobody really seemed to care about and a third game that only got released in Japan. A series you rarely see mentioned anymore.

9. Excite - E tier. Excitebike is a very iconic NES game, and the series has had a good revival these last few years with Excite Truck, Excitebots and Excitebike: World Rally. While reasonably popular amongst Nintendo fans, the games didn't have enough mainstream success to propel the series any higher than the letter it starts with.

10. Pilotwings - E tier. A series that's always had a good cult following amongst Nintendo fans and has had a revival recently.

11. Wave Race - E tier. Another cult favourite amongst Nintendo fans, not much else to say really.

12. Magical Starsign - F tier. A somewhat obscure series that doesn't seem to have much of a fanbase.

13. Pullbox/Pushmo - D tier. A series that seems to be at the forefront of Nintendo's download revolution. Successful sales wise, successful reception wise and has built up quite a fanbase.
You bring up some interesting points. I will think about them and if you can get more people to support your points, I will make the changes, no questions asked.

I will add some of the series you suggested in the queue. I have several series you didn't mention in the queue as well. :troll:

I definitely support the Pokemon, and animal crossing, the other 2 to me doesn't matter, if the Earthbound VC sells well and gets people into the series I would move it up to D or C. Sorry for discussing third party though. Also Kid Icarus should be in C-tier because its relevant thanks to Uprising

I agree with Tetra's Tracker about Pokémon and Animal Crossing. Disagree about Game & Watch and Golden Sun.

IMO, Kid Icarus is fine in the D tier, unless it gets another game.

I will move Pokemon up to A-Tier with Mario.

About Animal Crossing, I feel as that its as big as Pikmin. Having Pikmin one full tier below it seems odd to me. Perhaps Pikmin could be moved as well?

Too soon. I think it's better to see how Pikmin 3 is received.

I think Animal Crossing is quite bigger than Pikmin.

For instance, AC spans 4 consoles (GCN, Wii, DS, 3DS) and 5 if you consider the original N64 release in Japan. And it is likely to get a Wii U installment as well.

On the other hand, Pikmin has 2 GCN games, a Wii remake, and Pikmin 3 for the Wii U.

Pikmin had two Wii remakes actually.

Regardless, I see your point. I will definitely mull this over. I will probably change it in the near future.

No offense but we really shouldn't be judging characters by their series, we should be judging characters for themselves. There's a reason we might get another Star Fox character and might not get another Mario character. But because I'm bored and feel like it (just note that these aren't in any real order inside the ranks):

A:
Mario
Pokemon
Zelda

B:
Kirby
Donkey Kong
Metroid
Fire Emblem
Wario
Animal Crossing

C:
Smash Bros
Star Fox
F-Zero
Pikmin
Starfy

D:
Punch Out
Kid Icarus
Golden Sun
Custom Robo
Rhythm Heaven

E:
Everything Else

I absolutely agree. I think individual character merits are more important than some hypothetical sort of proportional series representation. That's not to say that series "size" isn't important (I don't think we'll get, say, more than one Golden Sun character), but I think that, for the most part, characters earn their own spots; franchises don't earn spots for characters that might not even deserve to be in the game.

My ranking of series "tiers" would be:

A-Tier
  • Mario (including Yoshi games, RPGs, spinoffs, etc)
  • Pokemon
  • Zelda
Nothing really comes close to these in terms of massive representation (and money-making) for Nintendo as a company. They're basically symbolic of the company itself.
A Minus Tier
  • Wii series
Just as financially important for Nintendo, but not really used to showcase what the company is traditionally known for.
B-Tier
  • Animal Crossing
  • Donkey Kong
  • Kirby
  • Metroid
  • Star Fox
  • Pikmin
  • Wario Land / Ware
  • F-Zero
  • Fire Emblem
These series are all greatly popular within the general gaming public. Most of them are prominent due to a combination of financial success and the fact that most are first-party franchises.
C-Tier
  • Golden Sun
  • Punch-Out!!
  • Starfy
  • Kid Icarus
  • Mother
  • Custom Robo
  • Nintendogs (though if we go by financial success, it might be B-Tier)
  • Game & Watch
  • etc.
Series that have a small number of games and don't see a lot of support or representation from the company's marketing, but have decent popularity. Mostly well-loved and remembered by specifically Nintendo fans rather than general gamers.
D-Tier
  • Wave Race
  • Doshin the Giant
  • Card Hero
  • Xenoblade
  • Fossil Fighters
  • Magical Starsign
  • Endless Ocean
  • many, many others
Basically, these IPs are usually second-party and aren't promoted heavily as one of Nintendo's big-hitters. They often only have one or a few games, and aren't what you think of when someone says "Nintendo".

I would move F-Zero down to C for your list because it isn't as popular as it used to be, their last major game was GX for the Gamecube.

If we're gonna categorize everything Nintnedo has done then I'm guessing the Z tier would be Nintendo's Love Hotels.

I have my own tiers… and I am including an "S Tier."
The way I set up my tiers involve character slots, the options a series has, critical reception, and sales.
S Tier:
-Mario
-Pokemon
These are two of Nintendo's best selling franchises and are two of the best selling video game franchises of all-time. In terms of character representation, these series will most likely get the most characters. Mario already has a 5th slot again with Rosalina, but Bowser Jr. seems to be a likely candidate for the 6th slot. Pokemon already has good characters that don't deserve to be cut and Mewtwo is by far one of the most requested characters worldwide. Pokemon might get a 6th slot from a Gen 5 Pokemon, Zoroark perhaps. They will get 4-6 slots.
A Tier:
-The Legend of Zelda
Strictly Zelda. This series has some good option for slots and is a series that Nintendo emphasizes on. Often draws in crowds, gets good reviews, and gets some pretty good sales. However, it's arguable if this series will get a 5th slot. Ganondorf is guaranteed while other characters, like Ghirahim and Toon Zelda, are fighting for a 5th slot. I see about 4-5 slots.
B+ Tier:
-Donkey Kong
-Kirby
Two series with great sales and have great followings. Donkey Kong is placed higher for having 2 tremendously good options in King K. Rool and Dixie Kong. These two might get their own slot, but one might come out with one. Kirby also has a good option in Bandana Dee, but fans argue whether or not the series is fine with the main trio or should have Bandana Dee. I see 3-4 slots here.
B Tier:
-Fire Emblem
-Star Fox
Fire Emblem would be lower had it not been for Awakening. Ike is still a rather popular character and might come back. While people want Chrom and Roy, Fire Emblem is not as big or as popular as Kirby or Donkey Kong, so it will only get 3 characters max. While Star Fox is definitely losing popularity, it gets here for the fact that it has a 3rd spot alone. It might live to see a cut or have both Falco and Wolf. Krystal getting her own slot is highly questionable. Star Fox is ranked lower than Fire Emblem because it is more likely to get a cut rather than a character. I see these series get 2-3 slots.
B- Tier:
-Kid Icarus
-Metroid
These series definitely draw in some crowds. Kid Icarus is placed higher for the fact that if has two extremely good options with Palutena and Hades or Medusa. Palutena also has worldwide popularity. Metroid is placed below because the only really good option here is Ridley, but Dark Samus seems popular. Any other character might get in, but chances are rather low. I can see these series stick it out with Pit and Samus only. I see these series get 1-3 slots.
C Tier:
-Animal Crossing
-Pikmin
-F-Zero
-EarthBound/Mother
Animal Crossing is also a rather popular series and it's possible that it could get two candidates, but I can only see the Villager get in solo in this game. It is ranked higher for getting a character already. Pikmin 3 is currently helping the Wii U right now and it is a series that Nintendo is recognizing. 2 characters here are not out of question, but they don't seem very likely. It could be a good series to get a second candidate for the next game as it has Louie and Alph. F-Zero is placed below as it definitely has two good options as well with Black Shadow and Samurai Goroh; both these characters have some demand. However, seeing the state of F-Zero, getting that second slot is unlikely. Outside help to revive the series will probably help get that slot. EarthBound is on here for the simple fact that it already has two slots. The series may live with a cut, but EarthBound on Virtual Console helps Ness not get cut. EarthBound is ranked lower for most likely getting a cut rather than a character. I see these series get 1-2 slots.
D Tier:
-Wario
-Yoshi
-Game & Watch/Ice Climber/Robot
These series have one clear candidate. Wario and Yoshi are highly unlikely to get a character. Wario is more likely for having more options, but Wario seems to represent the series just fine and no one from WarioWare or Wario Land stand out. Yoshi is just fine with Yoshi alone and the Baby Mario Bros. and Kamek seem like longshots. The other series are retro; I would be surprised if they got a second candidate. These series will definitely get 1 slot alone.
E Tier:
These include other series like Wii Fit, Xenoblade Chronicles, Punch Out!!, Golden Sun, Mysterious Castle (Takamaru's series), Wii series and among others. They all have deserving candidates, but only the frontrunners will get in. Depending how things go for Xenoblade in the future, I can imagine it going from E to possibly C if X is a Xenoblade sequel and if the series will have a future beyond X. While the Wii series is by far one of the best selling series for Nintendo, the only candidate is obviously the Miis, so it ends up here rather than getting higher on the list. These series will have no slots or just one.
