Ok I thought this up a few minutes ago and I'm not sure its such a good idea but I'll post it anyways.
So it goes like this their are 25 set races(like event matches) If they are set they can be balanced. Like Sonic vs Fox. Certain race types could allow certain types of characters. Like all flyers our all heavy characters or all light characters. That could make it almost balanced. and whichever character gets to the finish line first wins(ya I know that pretty obvious) But theirs twists like the ability to use items and final smashes in order to slow your opponent down. Also their would be obstacles in order to impede your progress. So races for brawl. Thoughts?

Uh, this would be incredibly hard to balance, and rightfully so. I pick Sonic = I win? Or possibly in some levels, I pick a flying character, I win?

Nah.

Sonic vs Bowser sounds like a fair race. XD

It could be fun though, if they somehow managed to balance it....

Well, you could make the stage challenging by adding obstacles that are difficult to get by with fast characters such as sonic, but if you choose boswer getting through the race would be easier since he's stronger. dunno how that would work out though.

Slow characters like Bowser, Dk, DeeDee, and Wario might have races of their own.

Flying characters like Kirby, Pit, MetaKnight, And Jiggs will have races/obstacles/ own race set.

Fast characters like Sonic, Fox, Captain Falcon, Diddy, and Pikachu would have speedy races.

Normal characters like Mario, Samus, Luigi would have..normal races..and

Technical characters like Ness, Peach, Link, Zelda, Lucas, and Ice climbers would have races that require thinking.

It could be balanced I think.

You are a very pessimistic and bitter young man.

I think it'd work better as a series of events, but I really like the idea.

This game looks Kirby enough already, let's just make it the sequel to Kirby's Air Ride.
Kirby's air ride? Not that I've played the game but I'm pretty sure its a 3d racing game.
Not a 2d fighting game with a racing feature. maybe. Were the race to the finish stages in Melee like Kirby Air ride? no.

It's really no more ludicrous than break the targets. After all, some characters have attacks with longer range or wider hitboxes than others, but they'll be playing on the same courses as close-range characters. Balancing out a racing mode would probably be a bit more difficult, but not impossible IMO. Although perhaps more trouble than its worth. . .

I think a better way to do this is to make the races diverse. Like, rather than have different sets of races, have races implement all types of movement, like there'll be some parts where slow people, like flyers, would have a dis-advantage, but later on in the race, there would be a big wall to scale that would take longer for the other person to cross, I do think that the camera could be a problem, Sonic VS. Bowser could be bad, unless it was split screen.

This doesn't sound like a bad idea. In a sort, it would almost play like Gourmet Rally, for Kirby Superstar. Dedede normally doesn't run that fast in battles, but was tweaked for the race to compete with kirby! Very creative, I say.

And that game was one of the best SNES games, so I see why not they should add in stuff related to that game? They already have co-op...

why not just make it a time trial Race to the Finish for each character and be done with it?

with two players, either the screen can stretch so far it'll be more stupid than Yoshi 64, or it'll be splitscreen(which is just as stupid imo).

and as said before, it's possible to balance a race between two characters of different speeds(sonic vs bowser) but it's obviously too much work and not worth it.

The new kirby game suprising does look similiar to ssb. Never looked at it like that before.
You've played Kirby Superstar right?

Smash may be the spiritual successor to KSS(so many similarities, silly Sakurai), but that looks like a true successor to the game itself.

ABOUT TIME.

Hmm very smart idea, and also spit screen for the win. And also their could easily be an online mode implemented.

Time trial could work, I was thinking about it, but its just not as fun or as hectic. And I think splitscreen works fine, but I guess its unlikely considering even co-op isn't split screen.

The co-op mode in Brawl is very much alike to the superstar co-op mode. Both have shared screen multiplayer, both the first player is the focus and both the second magically returns if he goes off screen to name a few.

Races don't have to be just running straight from one point to another.
There could be obstacles. Bigger, stronger characters would be able to destroy things like walls faster.
To make things interesting, you could split the race into parts..
Actually, my idea would sound like melee's adventure mode,
only with 2 players competing to get to the end first. It would only work if it was made split screen..

Also, they could really be on the same stage instead of different ones..
They could start in different places, and meet up somewhere in the middle and fight to get to the end.
That would be pretty fun.
