I read an article at RFIDwizards.com written by Louis Sirico who by invitation visited a remote facility in northern Virginia to see a demonstration of NOX – a new Intelligent Perimeter Defense system deployed by the FBI that uses covert Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to track people and assets without their knowledge. The link above is to the article and it's pretty wild when you read how something they call ID-dust is used to track where you have been walking and it will trigger a video recording if detected in a certain location and sends an alert to security personnel on their phones. The screen shot of the program NOX looked to be in a department store. I wonder if the UK has this to monitor their people with all those cameras they have on their streets?

10irony.

I feel scared. More and more crazy people are getting in high power recently and anybody could climb their way up and use this for sick, twisted things.I want to be proud of my country, but it is full of idiots.

Let's hope these stay as private/exclusive as possible.

lets see how easy it is to get into the FBI:
no criminal record.

Well, I guess their not criminals UNTIL THEY TRACK PEOPLE DOWN AND KILL THEM.

Cool idea, but America should stop acting on those ideas.

No.

The argument of "if you have nothing to fear, then you have nothing to hide" does not apply. We Americans have a right to privacy. We are NOT supposed to have our every move tracked by the government.

This is terrible. Is it just me, or are we slowly becoming a police state?

Technically, it's not in the Bill of Rights, but as human beings, we deserve to not have to explain to Big Brother what we are doing.

ATTENTION GOVERNMENT: 1984 was not an instruction manual.

They should put this technology to good use, like putting it in **** that gets jacked all the time (ipods, arcade sticks, ect) so we can have a show called "How to catch an Ipod thief" or something.

I can see it being good for tracking criminals around, buts all the good I can see coming out of it, if any at all.

To be technical the government can only do what the people empower it to do. Meaning unless "we americans" remove that right from them, the government can do whatever we empower it to do. And since its not explicitly denied, its an implied power.

RFID's are currently very short ranged, however. The long range ones (which are still kind of short) cost too much to be widely used. So they don't do a very good job of tracking humans, yet.

I'm sigging this.

To contribute something to the topic, I can't believe that something like this is possible without the whole country protesting against it. I can only hope that's because not enough people know about it, not that not enough people care. :/

He did so a week ago;).

To add my opinion, this certainly is an invasion of privacy, but what really is the government going to do?

I don't know, I don't see the gloom and doom everyone is picking up with this. From the sounds of this technology, it is not only nowhere near advanced enough to do anything malicious, but also, unless I'm misunderstanding something, it can't really tell WHO is moving. It sounds like there's just dust spread on the floor and onto items, and it allows those movements to be tracked, which coupled with security cameras opens up a better ability to find someone stealing. If it is as I'm understanding and uses a dust of sorts, it would be impossible to use to track someone as everyone would have the same dust on them, and something as simple as washing your clothes would remove it. Now, if they want us to start getting chips put in us to work with this, THEN we have a problem. Until then, this is useless as anything but business security systems.

Most passports have RFID's in them (including the United States') and so do a lot of bank cards. Despite the security community screaming bloody murder, they just continue to put them in stuff.

When cellphones first came out they were basically useless too!

This technology will, of course, be improved upon and then you have your 1984 scenario coming to life.
Well, that's very true(that the tech will improve), but I can see no way for this to differentiate people without us having to get a chip or something embedded in us, which would obviously be about the time we exercise our constitutional rights and take away the governments power to be replaced. I think, as this tech is described now, there is no way even with it advancing for it to create a 1984 scenario without us giving it the ability to. Also, your cell phone example is great, because honestly as it sounds phones are a much bigger threat to our privacy than this whole RFID nonsense... The RFID seems to be nameless, but they can triangulate signals with phones to find out exactly where they're at and know it is YOU who are there, not just someone. A little bit of improvement on that technology and they could have every cell phone owners exact location without us knowing no problem, and that's a lot closer to being possible right now than identity sensitive RFID.

Haha, that's amazing.

Is there any plan to use this tech to target people for surveillence or anything soon? And will use of this require any type of warrent or anything?

The tech itself can't be used for surveillance at all yet. They would need to put receivers pretty much everywhere nationwide to do so. All it's effective for right now is to track products and people throughout stores, and other places where malicious activity may occur. Pretty much a way that, when coupled with cameras it can tell X product was at this point at this time, which is covered by camera A, so check that camera and you can know who stole this product. From what I'm getting it seems like a more advanced version of the things that set off the alarms and such at stores, that actually allows movement to be tracked.

Yeah, your right, what's even worse is every minute you spend on the internet is already being tracked (mostly for marketing purposes). To be honest though, it's not the lack of privacy that bothers me, it's the lack of equality in privacy. The cell phone company can record my calls, but I can't turn around and find out what all the business practices of that company now can I. Of, course, that's the key to taking away rights, if you try to take away too much to fast people fight back, so you have to leach it away with small things at a time.

Chip your kids, keep them from getting kidnapped!
Chip your remote, so you can find it while your kids are getting kidnapped!

Slowly? We are rocketing out of control

One thing I read on CNN, which they put a nice slant to say it's a good thing, was that at anytime the FBI/CIA could turn the microphone on your cellphone to listen to suspected to terrorists... It's just a steady down turn towards total oppression.

Yeah, I changed my avatar to the girl from Ju-On/The Grudge.

I swear, America is going to turn socialist. Just watch.

What happened to privacy? The better question is, what gives the government the right to monitor people like this? For safety? I'm not buying it.
