I just recently started using Marth and I'm comfortable with him and everything(it was hard after being used to Link, and not playing for six months...). I was just wondering, what are some basic strategies with Marth's? I'm decent with Wavedashing, and pretty good at wavelanding, but that's about it, so nothing involving things of that nature please... Thanks.

Time for some captain obvious..

Keep yourself at tipper range from your opponent at all times. They can't reach you while you can reach them, plus you're too close to get properly shot at. THE basic strategy. ;P

In other words, SPACING.

It is not the easiest thing to learn, but this definetly comes with practice. Know your range because Marth has AMAZING range WITH a disjointed hitbox.

(I just started Marth too, I'm a Fox main.)

With that, I'll throw in some positioning, generally, try to stay at the same or lower level of the stage as your opponent. Marth has great upward and sideways attacks, but he's quite vulnerable when attacked from below.

Don't abuse counter attack. Work on your grabs. Marth is definatly a grabber.

Good reply Rune.

Yeah use counter sparingly. (In lower levels of gaming most times I'd use it is when the opponent is recovering, it cans set you up pretty well.)

Hmm grabbing... I don't use it that much, but thats just me.

Thank you all for the replies, oh, also, I made a new account, this is the name I will use in tournaments when (and if) I attend them. (technically it will be Bane). But all the replies helped alot... THanks again.

If you had a gameplay vid, that would be the most helpful thing. We would know what you were bad or good at.

I don't know how to do those, the digital camera I have won't upload the videos or anything... I've tried to put yoyo videos of me, and a few different gameplay vids, haven't done a smash one though, I might try it later...

This is how i began to get good with marth there is an event called " En Garde" Where you have to fight link that event i hapened to do first try and thats what got me into using marth i totatly recomend practicing on that event, other than that i would say marth is fast enough for you to keep hitting your foe until ko. Remember never stop hiting with marth.

No, this is horribly bad practice due to the fact you are fighting cpus and developing bad habits. Fighting any sort of human is better than fighting a cpu.

Not necessarily. Fighting lvl 9 cpus until I 4stock them has improved my gameplay with characters I don't play that much.
Sir, if you make that statement and mean it, you clearly aren't at the level that needs to be giving advice, no offense to you.

The only time cpus are even worth bothering are to practice technical skills, I wouldn't even try very many combos as human di is much better in most cases as the cpu di's predictably.

Eh, sounded abit bad

lol 90% of the time I don't mean to sound harsh..it just comes out that way.

The user I directed that post at isn't a bad player, hes just not reached higher levels of play yet and got a better mindset, I don't mean to insult him.

Now people that want to agrue and disagree about something they don't know about, thats where the other 10% comes in.

I try to not let my foe not be ground-based as much as I can because Marth has good aerials. Keep in mind other characters will have better aerials from time to time.

What if all I can fight is cpu's? I have a friend who plays with me, about the same skill level as me, but his mom won't let him come alot. I've been trying Short hopped arials and using wavedashing/landing to edge hog, on the cpu. I think I've gotten better by doing and I try not to pick up bad habits, is it inevitable?

Either conciously or sub conciously, you're going to develop bad habits from playing the cpu if you do it often.

You really should find ways to play with a human being as thats the best by far.

Wow, another of those posts which you were trying to prevent BlueDeath. I'm so sick of these.

Anyway, as to the whole training in an event and Against CPUs argument......NO! CPUs suck and will make you worse unless, as BlueDeath said, you are practicing tech skill. End of story.

In reference to this posts actual topic, Learn to edgeguard properly. By this I mean know when to use one edgeguard technique (D-tilt, F-smash, Ledge hop Bair, and occasionally Dair) rather than another. This is one of, if not the, easiest way to get a quick kill. Also, learn to exploit Marth's broken grab range. People, atleast the ones i verse, hate getting grabbed from eight feet away. I can't really think of anything else right now, other than mindgames but that's just obvious, so I'll end it there. Hopefully that helps.

I can't add to much but cpus are good for learning the spacing of moves. Dont play "against" them. What I mean is dont practice your entire game on them. I used them to help me get Marios Fair down just stuff like that I am personally horrible against computers but own my friend who dominate 3 lvl 9s

This is the perfect use of a CPU. I haven't seen it put into better words. "Don't play "against" them." May I use this?
