New Idea: Character Subs

I was just thinking about what would be cool to implement in Brawl and came up with this: Character Substitutions. So basically, at the character select screen (during stock matches only) you could pick two characters to play in one match and the amount of stocks to play each character for. For example, if you were playing a four stock match, you and your opponent could each play a certain character for the first two stocks, then another for the last two. You could also plan it out to play one character for one stock, and another for the remaining three.
I think this would put a radical new outlook on counterpicking characters and stages, having several different match-ups to look out for. Weighing how strong one matchup is compared to another would also have to be of utmost importance.
If not for two different characters, you might as well be able to pick two different costumes for your character (for that mid-round change of luck).
I think this could help raise the excitement and intensity of stock matches and provide the "big gameplay change" that boosts Brawl into video game legend.

Better Idea: Choose a different character for each stock you have. In a three stock match for example, each player chooses three different characters and start the match as normal. Whenever a character is out, that player can choose any of the remaining characters they have while on the platform using the d-pad. I'm 99% sure something like this will be in Brawl since there is something similar to this in SSB:M event matches.

better idea, choose character 1. choose character 2. choose stock #. each character will have that number of lives. when the first one dies, they're gone, and teh 2nd one kicks in.

its really not that new of an idea. many games have had modes where you fight with one character till they are dead, and then a new one kicks in.

i wouldnt mind what your talking about happening, but i dont see it happening either. it would be a fun change of pace, but then your just shoving two seperate matches together into one time slot and it really wouldnt change much.

*thinks on it for a little while*...

but ya know, at tournaments...if you were to force a PLAYER change as well as a character change....kinda like a 2v2...but in a 1v1 format...that would be really interesting.

over all, id be most interested in that more so than just one person controlling both.

hmmm...with just one person, id probably set it up this way....

all first choices are blind.

loser picks stage
winner picks character
loser picks character
winner picks sub
loser picks sub
winner picks how many lives first char gets
loser picks how many lives first char gets

second lives are determined by how many lives first one gets.

the more i think about it, the more interesting it COULD be...or it could break the game flow... =[

im not sure.

i can only hope for a ditto character where it shows up as ditto, untill the match starts, then you find out who you play as.

of course, a setting would be nice so i could set per match, or change ever number of lives.

i have a idea. how about you can swithc characters at anytime in the match. so think about it. you pull of massive combos with say .........samus abd then smash your oponent up. then you switch to lets say...............capt falcon and knee smash him which sends the, flying. then you switch back to samus and finish him with a charged shot or missile.

BUT!!!!

they would share stock and damage so you cant change everytime you get a beating.

this would either make it or break it so it is a verry big risk.

hmm, it's a good idea. Would definatly change the pace of battle, and let people use thier other skills for other characters, instead of just sticking to one. Would let you make more use of the giant character selection (assuming it's going to be aroud 35). It's a good idea. Might get a little confusing tho, having to quickly ajust to the new character, in a fast paced environment like Smash

That's really a cool idea for non-serious battles. Imagine if you could also set a different amount of stocks for every player... and a certain pattern of randomly selecting characters...

All-Star-Survival-Match, baby.

I like the idea of assigning a character for each stock, even if it's just the same character multiple times. It reminds me of DOA3, where you pick 5 characters and knock out the opponent's 5 characters first. I'd definitely like to see this in SSBB.

You can already sort of do this Melee with Zelda and Sheik. I do, and as mentioned earlier somewhere, the switching after two stock in a 4 stock match- I do that too.

How about you just pick your characters...and when youre floating on the hover platform you can choose which character you want to be? that seems the easiest way of doing it.

Seems like it (switching between any character on the fly) would require the game to process a hell of a lot more information than usual.

It sounds like a good idea, if you can pick two characters (think tag team). And, it would be nice if they made it so you did not need to die completely in order to switch. Here is how I would play it out:

1. It is a different style of match than the regular VS. Match. It would be known as a Tag Team Match.

2. In it, each player can pick up to two characters. In a stock battle, they number of stock for each character can be the same. In a timed battle, the characters can both be used interchangeably for the whole match.

3. After dying, the character can press down on the D-pad to "tag in" their other character. This has to be done before the character drops to the ground (i.e., it cannot be done while the character is flashing after returning to the stage). This would prevent the player from switching to a new character in the middle of a fight, thus healing all of their received damage.

This way, players can pick their two favourite characters, or strategise. If they can kick Bowser's *** better with Link than with Mewtwo, then they simply switch at their next death.

PROBLEMS:

1. Characters would likely switch continuously after each death, which would effect the pacing and make it seem like two matches played at once. i.e. (Player One switches to Fox. Player Two dies and switches to Ganondorf. Player One dies and switches to Link. Player Two dies and switches to Falco. Cont.)

I don't know why people think changing characters between deaths is a good/fun idea. If you would do this, you might as well leave all characters available for switching. But in that case, it almost takes the fun out of the game and puts more focus on strategy and counterpicking, and when both players are dropped to one stock the last player to die can just counterpick the other player, which is kinda cheesy and ********.

IMO the idea of choosing one character per stock available is more fun to work with.
