I'd like to take the time in this thread to specifically discuss the translations that people have brought up. I have posted the main lump of information at the end of 2 similar threads, but I fear it'll simply be ignored; I hope this doesn't count as spam, and it's not my intention to cause irritation; infact quite the opposite.

STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE

1. いままでのスマブラシリーズ - The mistranslated bit is right at the start. "いままで" on its own literally means 'until now'. The mix up comes from the fact they talked about NESS in relation to 'until now', where the sentence ACTUALLY says 'To now's smash brother's series' literally translated. Put into english, that's 'The previous smash brother's games'. The next part に登場していた“ネス”というキャラクターがいます is mentioning the character Ness, emerging (i.e. coming) from the previous games.
が、リュカはそれに近いです。The final bit - [There is a character] close to him - Lucas.

tl;dr yet again, 'until now' should have been 'previous smash brothers games have'

Let me translate the french version:

You've known Ness since his first appearances in the SSB Series. You will quickly adopt Lucas. They both belong in the same PK characters family.

But they totally don't have the same physical attacks. What I mean: their standard attacks are different.

un personaje que apareció en anteriores ediciones de Smash Bros. - A character that appeared in previous editions of Smash Bros.
Spanish

Here I provide three following transations, which all have been translated to simply 'there is a character called Ness in the previous Smash brothers games'. This is blatantly aimed at newcomers reading it for the first time.

The English was the only one badly translated. The 'until now' was completely unjustified hype.

The fact that Lucas is just another clone character is no reason to assume that Ness is out either. Big whoop, Melee had hundreds of lame cloned characters exactly on par to Lucas (similar moves, but with enough change to apparently justify categorisation as a seperate character)

tl;dr, There is no more evidence that Ness isn't still in the game than there was before. I'll stake everything on him still being in it.

See you guys online in Brawl, as NESS! :chuckle:

That still says he is out to me. Lots of exaggeration and feeling in that post as well as misinformation.

1. Sakurai himself did not like the idea of clones and they were only in Melee in the first place to add more characters to the roster. If more time had been alloted to the game, they would not have been clones. And there were not "hundreds" of clones... only several, and we are not likely seeing any clones in Brawl.

2. All of those translations still make "exclusive" comparisons, not "inclusive." At the same time, had they used an inclusive comparison, Ness would have been confirmed.

I think the US translation is really no more "wrong" than the others if he is still in.

Most of Lucas' special attacks are the same as Ness'. All signs point to there being no clones this time around, and I think people who suddenly don't mind the idea of clones as long as Ness is still around are kidding themselves. It looks like Lucas is going to fill a near identical role to Ness, and there really is no need for him to still be in. Besides, the unofficial translation still implies that Ness is out, only it could possibly be considered to not imply it as strongly as the official one. It's still quite a stretch to think it's likely that Ness will still be in Brawl with all the evidence, though.

The translater for the page can be seen in a video demonstrating Brawl to the game journo's at IGN. The guy clearly knows his stuff and I doubt he'd put in a sentence like that if Ness wasnt returning because the translater guy knows. The translating seems to be monitered by Nintendo as to not give away false information.

There is no way it go's straight into an online translator and on to the website.

No Internet?!?
Even the French translation doesn't disprove him. It just means that if you like Ness, then you'll quickly adopt to Lucas.

That can be taken either way as well.

Ness's chances are still 50/50. Just like they were yesterday.

He's freaking DEAD. So is Tom Nook. Deal with it, Sakurai warned us that fighters would disappear, he hates clones, doesn't that mean anything to you? Stop being in denial, you'll be disappointed once the game comes. I was in denial about Sonic because I didn't want to be disappointed. Therefore I was extremely excited when I saw him in. But that's aside from the point.

Just remember that Brawl has been worked on for TWO YEARS, and people who've played it say that this is totally different from SSB and Melee. Things change, that applies for life in general, too.

Sorry for the rant, just sick of denial in this community. Probably a waste of time to post this anyway.

The question is, why did they take out ness and put in lucas instead....? Is ness somehow less popular than lucas? at least in japan? But yes, a lot of his moves are almost Identical to ness's, but better. Yes, ness is GONE.:ohwell:

Guys, the alternative translations are those of a Sakurai who's using Ness as a reference to the moveset, while avoiding unintentionally confirming an unannounced character. I don't deny his removal because I want him to be in, I deny it because it'd be moronic to suddenly remove one of the strongest characters, when related characters, and less famous or useful characters like the Ice Climbers still exist!

1. Lucas/Ness wouldnt be a clone. His specials are slightly different and apparantly all his normal moves/throws/smash are completely different.

2. Im still not going to get my hopes up.

Ness is out, the translation is only part of the evidence. Combine it with Lucas taking every single one of Ness's special moves, and Sakurai himself stating he didn't even want Ness in Melee, and you have way too much proof he isn't in, and nothing that says he is.

Melee = december 3rd, 2001. A little history for you. 3 of Ness' moves were taken, not 4, even though theyre both very similar. I'm sure we've all played Brawl with Lucas and can safely say that there are no differences, so yep. Ness Disconfirmed.

By gosh! People need to stop saying Mario is in the game! Yes, the Dojo says he is, but have YOU played Brawl? No? Then you don't know!

*cough*

You don't need to have the **** game to know what's in it. You know what helps? When the creator explicity says when something isn't it. Like Ness, for example.

Oh, and the huge different between PK Flash and PK Freeze? One freezes. The other explodes. Other than that, they are identical. Lolz.

It's fun to jump between topics of similar topic and repost the same thing over and over.

He hasn't said Ness isn't in it, the bad English translation SUGGESTS it.

Nothing justifies people bashing Ness. NEDM. Seriously, all I'm trying to say is that all the people that are going "lol he sux" and "good ridanc lol" need to get theirselves spayed or neutered to prevent corrupting the gene pool any further, and stop saying stuff that hes been disconfirmed.. So please, be a good bunch of spazes and wait until Sakurai says so. Nuff said.

No, every translation has the same ambiguity. Your topic is based on bad babelfish and the like translators, so I'll promptly ignore them.

I honestly think that you guys are so much better as translators. It makes perfect sense when looking at Lucas's moveset and Sakurai's previous comments.

So let me get this straight, you're blaming someone who gets PAID to translate the website just because you haven't been able to brace yourself for more than a month?

Please, come on.

Wow, having people be on denial on Nsider is one thing, but it's weird to see it here. I mean really, any translations or text aside you can tell Ness is probably gone. Accept it now to make it easier, that way if he is in you'll get a pleasant surprise and if he isn't (which appears much more likely) then it will be easier. The longer you wait to accept it the harder it will become to accept it.
