Hello everyone, I've been playing melee for more then a year now. And one big problem I have with my game is to get back on stage when being edgeguarded, I am playing a lot against a Peach and a Puff and I main Falco and Ganon. So my problem is that each time I try to come back by sweet spotting the edge, these two characters simply Dsmash on me and enjoy the easy KO. So I decided to learn edge teching by reading the "The Official Everything Thread - The Basics, How To Improve, Frame Data etc." thread but I still can't figure out how to land a edge tech. So if someone could help me with clear explanation and maybe a good way to practice I would be very thankfull.

P.S. Sorry if I am hard to understand english is not my primary language

the timing for edgeteching is the same as ground teching but the distance is tricker to judge. Watch Wak's advanced techs guide: he shows you the timing and such (i forget which episode it is)

once you have the timing and if you wanna practice it alone the easiest way (the way i learned how to do it) is to lay a motion sensor bomb on the edge then recover into it and try to tech it.. With enough practice you'll get it :)

Yeah the timing is different. It feels a little bit earlier. For practicing this, I go to training mode and put motion sensor bombs on the ledges and try to recover. And for falco, you can go on his break the targets stage, and practice edge teching on those platforms that hurt you. Hope this helped.

Some moves require smash DI to actually hit you into the stage. Peach's DS doesn't, it will suck you in, so you just have to get the timing down. I don't know about Jiggs though (I've actually never faced a puff in singles, just for an hour or two in teams (friendlies)).

I think I've heard that you can't input the tech during hitstun, this might be sth you mess up. (Meaning you have to hit L / R right before getting hit, which will make you tech for the next 20 frames).

As long as you touch the wall, you can tech. No need to SDI if your Falco's up+B is "riding the wall", just time it right.
A tech has a 20-frame window, so you have to press it within 1/3 seconds before you hit the wall. Many people, including myself, underestimate the size of this window and try to tech as late as possible, which often results in it being too late. Try to convince your fingers to tech a little bit sooner than you think is right =).

Useful facts:
- Tech only happens with a full press on L/R, the "click". Anything less is ignored, and every "click" is considered a tech (including airdodges = wavedashes, full shields etc).
- If you "click" within 40 (IIRC) frames from the previous "click", it won't tech. So don't just mash tech if you're bouncing between walls on Pokemon Stadium, because each attempt will just reset the "no-tech zone" timer back to 40 frames. No, this timer won't go away even if you succeed in teching. You can't have two techs too close to each other.
- edit: Forgot, but like Xyzz says, you can't input a tech during hitstun, unless you actually tech on that frame (it's sometimes possible to SDI into a wall and tech before the hitstun is over).

Yep, I'll further testify that the timing is earlier than you would think. I couldn't edge tech for ages and then I started pressing L earlier and whoooooah now it's mad easy (except if I'm using marth...).

If you have trouble being down smashed a lot try to recover higher when you can. Don't always go for the ledge when you don't have to.

For wall techs press the button earlier you normally would. Try different timings, you will eventually get it.

SIMPLEST POST:

Press L/R a little bit before you get hit. Most people including me thought you press L/R as you get hit which is not the case
