My Opinion: Soul-less Fighters

I don't really get it, but somehow, the screenshots are different from ones in Super Smash Bros. Melee. It isn't the obvious ones, like they aren't the same game, but listen closely. Take a look back at the screenshots and tell me if you agree with this point:

In SSBM, many different franchises are represented, ranging from old school Ice Climbers to itty-bitty Pichu. In my mixed up mind of cashew horses and winking Froot Loops, the characters seem to have a sense of who they are fighting. For example, Donkey Kong vs. Link. Donkey Kong LOOKS like he knows Link IS the heroic figure that everyone loves, and his moves just say "eat this mother****a" . I like how Kirby modestly attacks its foes, and how the Game and Watch shows plentiful bell-ringing joy when it scores. The characters have a motivation, or a look, that says "I don't care how heroic you are, you're gonna get it"

Now, about Brawl. The screenshots are just...there. It looks like a stiff Character X vs. Character Y kind of thing. Not only that, but the inclusion of Final Smashes does nothing but to exemplify and boast the character's power. The moves they use don't show any fighting passion. Maybe it's just because screenshots can't fully capture a game, but still, it needs to have some merit towards the game.

Here are some screens to make you understand it better:

VS.

Please don't flame me for this, I am just trying to express my opinion, and by no means downplay Brawl's wicked awesomeness. It is going to be outrageously fun, and I could be horribly wrong, but I just wanted to give my take so far.

That could be it. I mean it's like your comparing screenshots of SSBB to live play of SSBM. I mean if you could post some screenshots of melee perhaps I could understand you a bit better.

While I never saw the in-development screens for Melee, I understand what you're trying to say. However, I don't think it's going to be too much of an issue once the actual game is released.

I think I'll do that, because...well, it emphasizes my point better :) Thanks for suggesting it.

Actually, I think the "motivations" and such, might just be your imagination.
I think this because I imagine the same sort of thing when I play.
We imagine that the characters have motives and personalities based on our experiences with them and what their creators have made them to be.
And we imagine the clashing of the two/three/four characters personalities as they attack eachother, often with different results. Ex Peach vs Zelda and Peach vs Mario.
This is just my opinion, but, also, who else does this?

Has anyone noticed that the characters actually make eye contact in Brawl? They move their heads to look at their opponents. Look at any screenshot, you'll notice it.

I think it's sad that someone should have to say this on their post.

I understand where you're coming from but I'm not sure you notice this stuff as much when you're in the passion of a battle.

It's sad someone had to quote it.

The only reason I said it is because of people who come in and don't even read a post auto-flame it -.- I'm not acting cowardly or frail >_>

The passion of the battle is all about the passion of the character vs. the passion of another character. The passion of a battle determines how epic it is, and none of these fights in SSBB seem epic.

Proof that the soul of the fighters is actually MORE apparent in Brawl than in Melee.

I'm sorry but I honestly don't understand what you mean, Meta-Kirby. I don't see any difference inbetween the two sets of screenshots. Actually that last screenshot appears to be the most static(the one with the ganondorfs). I'm seeing less soul in that screenshot than in any of the Brawl ones.

And I think most of this stuff you're talking about has more to do with the actual screenshots you picked (the one of young link defending Pichu wouldn't work from the side, the eyes are just right in that particular shot), and like others said, just your imagination from what you've subconsciously designated for the characters.

Brawl is, in my opinion, going to have much more in terms of inter-character interaction compared to Melee.

That's alright, I know it's my imagination based off other games I've played. I'm so use to seeing Bowser vs. Mario that when Mario vs. Link comes around, it feels pretty epic, like a duel of two heroes. Brawl seems to lack this in my mind as of now, Link vs. Mario looks just, static and robot-ish...

It's still going to be the best game ever though, and I'm SURE I'll change my mind after another trailer.

It looks more realistic and less cartoony. While it looks less lively, it looks more believable.

they dont have individual facial expressions. in melee characters like the ice climbers look happy with a little bit of excitement, while characters like gannondorf look pissed off. thats not show in the brawl screen shots.

It's just your imagination.

You haven't played Brawl yet, but you've played Melee loads. You created personalities for your Melee characters, when infact they are nothing more than a wireframe made to look like characters.

Ya, it's been speculated upon in many threads....

But to the original post I still don't completely get what you're saying.. i think they show more expression in Brawl than they ever did in Melee.

Too bad I haven't yet figured out how to post screenshots (yeah, I'm dumb, sue me :p)
But go to the Smash Dojo and look up the screenshot where Kirby has slipped over a banana peel...
Can't tell me there's no emotion in that :p You can clearly see that "... that was so not cool..." look on Kirby's face.

Well, most of the screens for SSBM were captured in the middle of battle, as in the camera was set in a more dynamic angle, making it look like it was the "heat of the moment," or something along the line, while Brawl's... aren't. They are just mainly taken from "free" range or kind of close to action.

For example. Look at the Fox vs. Mario pic. It's just a picture, basically. Nothing special.

Now look at the Ness Vs. Young Link image. The camera is set in the middle of the battle, showing passion where there is none in Brawl's screens.

So it's just the screenshots. I'm sure the feeling will be just the same once you start playing.

Guys, it's just a game?
Seriously, how the hell does someone get passion out of Falcon Puching Pichu?
The only time you'd feel passion in Smash is probaly in Adenture mode in Brawl.

You've played Melee for more then 5 years.
You've only seen screens of the producres playing Beta-Brawl.

Too much speculation going on right now. Let's just enjoy out Chocolate Lucky Charms and wait for teh next update.
