I've been playing with Olimar a lot and was wondering if I was really any good with him and how I can improve in some ways. So, I got some vids recorded and decided to bring them here. If you got any pointers, or just comments, please post them (as picky, harsh, or nice as they may be). Sorry if there are too many. You don't really need to watch em all. Also, the first ones (from yesterday) are all against Toon Link. The older ones are all against Sonic. Well, here are the ones from yesterday:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=bSJFbt8oL-s (Battlefield)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=Pa40RFOzfr4 (Final Destination)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=PcUYCoeWsgc (Delfino Plaza)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=n1ONsswKDqI (Another Battlefield)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=aPFD2-HwFG8 (Frigate Orpheon -- Ouch)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=7euOy5plWQ0 (Smashville)

And these are a little older:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=nMPzmkpoCxI (Final Destination)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=aox6LC9fMmk (Battlefield)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=NMr7BvuTNFs (Lylat Cruise)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=_tyBORzeBWY (Halberd)

Oh yeah and... first post!

welcome to smashboards, i'm relatively new too :)
but the biggest thing that i noticed in your vids is that you don't seem to grab alot.
with olimar's amazing grab range its a shame not to use it to its fullest potential, and dthrow to fair works wonders at low percentages.

punish rolls with dmash more,. Against arrow spamming TLs, use your pikmin to soak up the arrows, i find its pretty easy to keep spacing without being forced into combos. Also more dthrow->upsmash

i agree with both of them
you need to grab more, it helps you control the ground game
grab (red/yellow/white) dthrow upsmash (red/yellow/white) up air (red/yellow) works as a good combo at low percents
some more >b would be nice too
good oli though

Yeah I knew he had amazing grab range, I would keep missing grabs with him though. Just need to do more training with it, thanks!

You seemed to use ^b as an attack a few times while coming back on to the stage, which is an extremely risky and pointless move. Also, to avoid being juggled while coming back on to the stage, if the opponent is standing on the edge you should grapple onto the edge rather than landing right on top of him.

Like many people on here have already stated, Grab more, the range on it is incredible. The Up-b attack you use to hop back on stage is a little risky, it can be punished very easily, so watch out for that.

Also, down who roll alot, down smash works wonders on people who love to roll alot, i believ someone has already mentioned that, but it's a very good point. Olimar's Over B move is also very very good, it keeps your opponents thinknng of what to do, try to get the pikmin off, or go in for an attack, either way, your opponent takes damage

good use of up tilt or neutral attack, looks the same.

Wow, you're pretty good! If I could ask: what control scheme/controller do you use?

Thanks, I'd always use his >b with only white pikmin, but I see how effective it is to use it much more (been playing more). I never knew when to exactly use that downsmash and I see that that's the best way, so I'll keep note of that. Thanks again everyone.

Oh, I use the Gamecube controller... all I did was change the Y button to grab.

Did you turn the "tap jump" off? I noticed you are really good at pulling of both that up-tilt and the short hop+Fair attack...

Actually, I didn't turn the tap jump off. I kept forgetting to and never got around to do it. I never use it to jump and always jump and short hop with the button, though.

you need to make better decisions with your attacking. i know that's kind of vague, but here's what i mean: i saw you dodge an attack by toon link, and you ended up behind him while he was left finishing his laggy attack, and you waited until his lag was almost through with... and then you tilt attacked him. another time i saw you in the same situation and you used a jab combo, then you backed away.

i mean, olimar has some of the best smashes in the game in terms of power, range, and speed, and you're throwing out jab combos and then leaping away? also, abuse olimar's grabs more... i think i only saw one throw in the first video? olimar has a sweet grab game, use it.

something you need to learn not simply as an olimar user but as a smash player is platform pressure. if someone is above you on battlefield, throw out an up smash, or short hop into fair/uair, depending on your character. as long as you've got a platform between you and your opponent (and you're the one below him), you have a large advantage.

don't fight in the air if you can't win. olimar has good aerials, but so did your opponent in those videos you gave us, and he had better range, AND you have one of the most gimpable recoveries in the game. if you're at a disadvantage in the air, try to make your aerial attacks part of combos, rather than beginning an attack in the air. and as always, stay below your opponent. in the air, you have the ground "behind" you, and he has a stage boundary. you've got the advantage, there's no need to fly up to his level for a contest on whose fair has the most priority when you can just keep hitting him with uairs.

Just a couple of issues I would like to bring up:

1) Grabbing. I know that this has been said over and over, but his grab is amazing. It's unpredictable, strong, long ranged, can get through shields, can get past rollers, everything.

2) Recovery. When you recover, you do press Up + B to attack and get to the field. It's usually better to cling to the ledge instead. Also, I noticed that your opponent jumped off of the stage to edge guard you, and he ended up killing you right there. DON'T BE AFRAID TO FIGHT OFF OF THE STAGE. Olimar's recovery is LONG. Taking a couple of seconds to perform a fair will just ensure that you get back safely. Also, tagging onto that, Olimar's Up B can still latch on to the stage if you're directly horizontal to (or a little bit below, in this matter) the stage. If an enemy is coming out to attack, the Pikmin Chain will go THROUGH them. It won't interrupt it. Instead of just waiting, attack or use the Pikmin Chain if you're at the right angle. Either one will help you get a clean recovery and an easy kill.

3) Move choices. If the enemy is to the right of you, don't use the up smash. If the enemy is retreating and you're not that close to him, don't fair, throw a pikmin. Olimar is a character full of choices. Each one of his moves are useful in some way or another. Don't worry if one attack choice isn't as strong as the other; if it doesn't hit, it's a useless move.

Otherwise, pretty good Olimar there.

you dont throw pikmin at low percentage, you use them once your opponent is above 100% which can throw them off, but its kinda useless since they are mainly used for dealing early quick damage
in my opinion i think throwing pikmen on low percent is helpfull. it keeps them occupied so u can throw some smashes or do a grab.
