My melee disk is dead. Is this the right place to post for help?

So, sorry if this is the wrong place, but my melee disk is finally going on the fritz. Its fine till I get to the CSS screen, then a second after a pick a character, I get an error screen that directs me to look at the gamecube manual, with no specific information. Can anyone help?

UPDATE: It seems as if this is only happening with Ganon. Falcon isn't freezing the game. Going to test with other folks, see where I'm @.

UPDATE 2: Yeah, everythings borked. Only Ganon freezes the game outright, but everyone else freezes it upon entering the Stage Select Screen.

The only thing that can help is buying a new disc.

It's only about 15 - 20 bucks at Gamestop.

A standard laser reader can easily read small scratches, but larger scratches on the plastic overlay may effect your load time. One quick tip is to put some toothpaste on a wet papertowel and VERY GENTLY buff the surface of your disc. Take your time; 15 minutes of lightly doing this should be good. I've fixed countless old CD's this way, including 2 melee discs.

This does work pretty well. I think it works better than buying the disc fixer stuff. Try it and if doesn't work, just pick up a new copy at gamestop or off ebay. I'm really surprised my disc hasn't stopped working yet.

Its fine till I get to the CSS screen.
CSS = Character Select Screen

Its fine till I get to the character select screen screen.
Anyways, this happened to me too like three years ago. I had to purchase my wife's little brothers copy of the game for ten bucks.

Oh I totally vouch for Glyde. I purchased a couple of games through them earlier this year and I will most likely never purchase from Gamestop again. Glyde is awesome.

Lol this happened with like me like 3 discs ago. I was funny cause it only happened with falcon and it spawned the joke that 'falcon was so manly he broke the game.' it was good fun.

thats impressive that you guys are finding melee for so cheap. Melee (as well as Double Dash) are two GC games that still selling as full priced games.

I suppose you can try to get it cleaned up, but your best bet is to probably just find a new disc somewhere.

Toothpaste huh...? That's neat.

I hated those stupid GCN optical disk. It never happened to me personally, but once day I was at a friend's house, and as he was taking out the Melee disk from the case, the disk snapped in half! Over a year later, I tell this story to some of my university buddies, and 2 of them tells me it happened to them also...

Toothpaste works well because there are thousands tiny abrasive little particles that are generally used for polishing/cleaning teeth, but they work to lightly and evenly mark your disk.
