My idiot friend

My friend (who is clueless about close to everything) recently picked up Lucas after switching from Ike. If you look at the Ike threads, you'll notice a post similar to this:

Here's the story. I finally convinced him to give up on Ike because no matter what he did, he never got kills, he never recovered. One day during a Free for all match of 4 people, we picked random characters, and ended up with Lucas. Surprisingly, he managed to get the smash ball with PK Thunder and finally started getting kills.

Unfortunately, that's where it ends.
He only knows how to walk towards an enemy and spam Ftilt about 4 times, spam PK Fire and Usmash.

My friend still has no clue how to recover with Lucas' PKT, he has no idea how to dodge and for the most part, he just blatantly ignores Lucas' entire moveset. When sent over the edge, he gets the idea to PK Thunder, but... It goes straight up and zig zags around in the air before he finally dies.

I've tried the following:
Letting him try to PKT himself for half an hour on Final Destination. Only 2 connected with him, sending him downwards.
Pretty much ignoring him in a FFA and letting him try and get a hit on us.
Forcing him into a 1 on 1 match.
Having my friend teach him. (He gave up.)
Kicking him in the crotch.

I'm at wit's end. Should I have him look for another character, or is my friend hopelessly doomed to a life of incompetence? Or is there any of you can say that might help him?

...

I'm reminded of my little brother. (I really, really hope he doesn't read this. <_<)

Anyway, I'm inclined to say that your friend is "hopelessly doomed to a life of incompetence" until he gets it through his head that PK Fire/ftilt/usmash spam will not win him the game.

I will express my sympathy for your situation, as sheer stupidity is almost painful to be next to.

Let him use Pit or MK because of their awesome recovery. or give him Mario, he's balanced. Or just close all contact with him and make fun of his smash...:)

Lucas =/= a begginers character. Tell him to not use him if he doesnt plan on taking Smash seriously.

TEll him to use Pit cuz he can spam arrows and his recovery is easy easy. Gimpable, but easy to handle.

He refuses to use any character but his main under the excuse of "it's good practice".
The worst part part is, he's not new to the smash world. He's been playing since Melee which deeply, truly saddens me. He practices more than any of my friends too. He makes progress, though it's very minor and very slow compared to the rest of us.

I'm tempted to try the "Kick him in the crotch" method again until he learns some sense...
What would you people say is the best way to teach a newbie how not to die?

I believe your friend is doomed to a life of incompetence, unless something big happens that manages to change his skill level, or his thinking method.

Edit: I have an answer.

Have him read every article from this website

That's for me to know
Yeah, I might recommend Pit as his starting character because of his insane recovery. That's what I did as my first brawl character (other than Ice Climbers to see whether wave dashing worked in brawl since I only could wavedash with the Ice Climbers in melee). If he dies using Pit's recovery, your friend REALLY needs help...

Pit sounds like a good starter. His Up+B doesnt do any damage so it's one more move he won't be spamming =]
Imo, Falco and Fox are pretty good starting characters, but he'd probably Phantom himself to death
If he uses Metaknight.. /breeze

lmao, he switched from one seriously bad character to an even worse one and then wonders why he never wins. Lucas is terrible. Have him play as snake, lol.

he sucks almost as bad as lucas.
Lucas doesnt suck, you just have to learn to be good with him.
And for your friend have him fight someone awesome at brawl a lot. Maybe then he'll start doing something.

Mario was made to be balanced and a good character to start off with for everyone.

Guys, you're talking to Bowyer. You have a better chance of convincing a hooker to give up ****ing people than telling him he's wrong. (which he is rololmao)

lol, whatever you say scrub.

Just because he was made to be average doesn't mean he's average.

lmao at Bowyer's infamy on SWF xD

In all due seriousness, I have no idea what to do for your friend... Maybe tie him down to a chair , tape his eyes to be perpetually open, and force him to watch Youtube videos of a good Lucas player (lol)?

Strap your friend into a chair ,glue the controller into his hands, take pause option off and make him fight computors (or others could relieve the coms) with 99 stock all night long with a stun gun set off to shock him if he goes to sleep.

Or he could use pit or kirby.

Tell him to choose one.
