My defensive options?

Hi,
I'm a melee player who's been playing some 64. I was just wondering what my defensive options are. For example, I keep getting down aired into rest. I find the shield stun is just ridiculous and that DI seems to have no visible effect.

decent or sort of decent smash DI will get you out of Dair->rest. A lot of the time, though, the only advice anyone can give you is "don't get hit."

The punishment game in 64 is very high, you'll need to focus a lot more on not getting hit because it'll lead to death, a gimp situation or a high percentage at the least.

If you're in shield, depending on your character you'll probably want to do jump>aerial OOS. Or, with characters like Samus or DK, UpB OOS. Learn **** DI (I think Moogle has a video of it somewhere).

'Don't get hit' is the defensive advice you want to follow.

D-Air > Rest? Shield. (And then you get grabbed)

Change your perception of DI. You have to register stick inputs rather than just holding it in one direction - smash DI.

Oh really? Didn't know that. Still holding up by instinct when getting thrown.

So jumping out of shield is good. Better than say rolling or shield grab?

Much better, depending if your opponent is a high level of play. Good players will punish rolling and should have good enough shield pressure to avoid the shield grab.

shield grab is better if you know it'll connect

rolling is meh, only ever use it to retreat

jumping out of shield is often a good option, but it can be punished if you do it too much

If it's Pika you can also Up-B out of shield - Up-B has invincibility frames and can carry you a fair way.

You can shield it, but good Puffs will just grab you instead, which is pretty bad for you.

Pika's utilt beats Puff's dair

Resist your Melee habits and avoid shielding aerials in this game

No. You can Smash DI out. Smash DI is the only DI in this game, and is essential for your success.

Ok. What can you do to get out of utilt to utilt to utilt? I find myself doing this a lot at around 30%. I also noticed that unlike melee, jab is the worst thing ever.

Situational - depends on the character and damage percent. DI up and away works most of the time. Jabs are often used for a "don't grab me bro" poke and fox jab is useful for setting up up smash.

Jabs are good for certain characters. For pika, I see two ways jab could be useful: if you manage to have your opponent against a wall, then you can infinitely jab him. And second is jab-grab.

Of course, the famous fox jab is still better.

Fox Jab is the best.

Also, have in mind that there are four characters who can jab-grab (Luigi, Mario, Ness & Pika)
one of the options are Jab+Immediately Z

If by Moogle you mean DMoogle/A$, then I don't think he has. He keeps saying he's gonna put it up, but i can't find it on his channel. A$, if you're reading this, put up the DI video!

People tends to overrate the 0-to-death combos possibility. It doesn't happen that often at all.
it's not just about that, have this in mind:
you'll need to focus a lot more on not getting hit because it'll lead to death, a gimp situation or a high percentage at the least.
which will sooner or later lead to death.

I'm pretty sure he meant me, not Moogle. Yeah I know, I keep meaning to make it and then putting it off. Maybe this weekend! Seriously, I need someone to pester me hard until I do it.

I remember a japanese player made a video of ****ing DI. Might not be exactly what DMoogle is referring to, but must be pretty close. I don't like that method though, as I think it takes too long to get ready to DI and to get ready to hold normally again. But that's just me, because I suck.

Star King's authority...

Just realised the vid's title begins with 半月 which means half moon. Funny how you can sometimes understand japanese with a little chinese knowledge.

Yeah that's basically it, although I think Sangoku's assumption is false; you don't have to move your left hand much at all to DI, like that Japanese guy does in the video, and the up/down DI method I use is a bit different. Maybe I'll make it tonight.

Someone needs to get on AIM and pester me about it though. :p
