Hi there, just to let you know, i live in Venezuela (next to colombia) so first and foremost this is the 3600023323.32 ask how to practice alone thread, but also how to influence my little brother (9 year old) so he can play better and make use of his age and (maybe) natural talent at melee, and so i can also get better.

I just want to know what you guys do when you live in a place where smash is non-existent, how do you practice alone? What to do to get yourself more fluid with your character, etc. I've been playing for a year, and so far i got l-cancel,wavedash,waveland, the most basic things down. I use to play with two other friends (granted, the cube's is actually one thiers, but since he doesn't use at all, i do) but there just not that into melee like i am (play almost everyday) and like i said, i have a little brother that just seems to be a natural at this, doing stuff that took me some day's to get use to. How can i educate him? and how can practice vital techskill, being fluid, etc. I mostly want my little brother (brian) to get into the game, but he's kinda of a sore loser, and i almost never let him win since i think he should learn from the experience, but he always plays again, and when he does win, i make sure to praise him so he can see l-canceling made a difference.

enough rant, give me your ideas:)

Just have fun with the game, and maybe try to get others interested in playing. I'm not convinced there's any way to make yourself motivated (in Melee, or any other aspect of life). You either want it or you don't. If anything, pushing your brother too hard to get him to improve will not only make him not want to improve, but not want to play at all. You don't want to be like those parents who force their kids into acting/pageantry. If he asks you for advice, by all means help him, but I think trying to coach him and tell him to train will kill his motivation and the spirit of the game much faster than anything else could.

Well, most people who live in places with relatively no scene tend to practice a ton of techskill (namely, the chillean smashers like Dark)

Sooo do that. Living far away from the community is hard, so just try to have fun and learn to do cool things.

A good start would be to watch all of Wak's advanced how to play videos and learn to do all of that stuff.
After that, learn some more advanced fun things like how to do shine->bairs and stuff.

Of course, you want to learn a lot, so since you can't really play people too much, watch a lot of videos of good smashers and try to emulate what they do.

And of course, introduce some of your friends to the game, they may end up liking it.

I for one usually take a lvl 1 cpu with a handicap of 9 and then you have a body to practice shffl'ing
Just get your basic tech skill down. Don't forget tech skill from the edge (ledge hop waveland, any stalls your character may have) and something comes up that is direction dependent like moonwalking or from either ledge be sure to practice it going in both directions/from both ledges.

and as for your brother, what bones0 said. Don't make it a military you-must-improve-100%.
Just have some laughs and do smart, clever, cool things.

and telling all your friends and your brothers makes it more social and fun. That needs to be reinstated for importance.

Thanks, yeah i love melee too much to stop playing so i've become pretty technical, and i don't try to force him, but he does like the game he just hates losing. Grateful for the advice, but i guess i didn't say it right, i mostly wanted stuff like how to do the entry name glitch, etc. Oh and do any of you guys now any minigames? my little bro really likes that, and i usually convince him to play some friendlies then a minigame. Thanks guys

Sorry, i didn't click on the last link, great guide looshkin, sorry for taking up your time :)

Mindgames are something that you aquire through experience...
You can pick up some tricks from watching pros, but its really not that simple of a thing...

An easy/simple example would be if you notice somebody shieldgrabs a lot, you can empty SHFF at them and spotdodge, so they miss the grab, then you can grab them or something.

But the concept of mindgames is really just not possible to explain.
Just trick your opponent into doing something you can punish.

Play tag. With one move.
Nair, or jab make for good ones, no projectiles. Just figure out your characters best approach move.

Play tag, whoever has the higher percent has to approach whilst the other strictly evades.

Bob-omb away. I forgot how, but get a sudden death to happen on poke floats. Wait for the bombs start falling and try to survive. I've made it all the way through the whole stage progression just once.
