Mortar slide problems

I can mortar slide but only when I hit an opponent. Is it possible to do one without hitting an opponent? I've tried hundreds of times - all failed. I saw a video of advanced snake techniques and the guy did mortar slides without hitting someone. Is it because of my version of brawl, or some other problem? Or is it my inability to do advanced techs(always hated l-canceling because I just couldn't get used to it. Wavedashing was also annoying)

To tell you the true...I always hate the wavedash in Melee...was so freakin hard!...but the slide mortar is piece of cake..of course everything needs parctice and I´m sure that with perceverance and practice you´ll do it "you can do it".

This is what Snake questions boil down to:

Well, every time I come here, that's it.

Depends on the method. Due to me recently changing Jump to Z, I now Mortar Slide with the C-Stick Down->C-Stick Up method. The key to this method is to flick the C-Stick Down, so that your thumb is not touching the C-Stick after you hit it.

If you slam the C-Stick down then move it back up without lifting your thumb, it will not work. Period. You must let the C-Stick return to it's neutral position before hitting it upwards. Thankfully, all you have to do is lift your thumb off of the C-Stick for little but a moment for this to happen.

Surefire way to nail it 99 out of 100 times:

When you do the dash attack with Snake, there is a little bit of smoke that appears near his feet. THIS is when you would cancel it into the Mortar. I don't know what technique you're trying to use, but I use C-Stick Down into Up+Z. Sometimes you'll plant a mine instead if you're sloppy (mostly happens when you're trying to Mortar-Slide from a standing/prone position).

You can also try: forward + A for the dash and up + A for the mortar. I tried that alot and i can now do it without contact. Also going into training mode and setting the speed slower helps to get the frames right.

I'm getting tired of people ignoring my Q&A.
I'm going to start flaming people, and I'm nearing there FAST.

This question has already been answered best by CSBrokaw.
