Melee vs smash 4

hi guys. I have a legit question for you (no flaming please)

I was thinking about the popularity of melee vs smash 4 and there is one topic I wanted to address and question as to why smash 4 players play the game they do. They can argue that there are more characters or more stages or that it is more aesthetically pleasing than its counterpart but I think that it is universally known that melee is more in depth and exciting than anything that smash 4 is able to produce. this brings me to my question:

How many top players, e.g. Zero, dabuz, Nairo, etc actually prefer melee over smash 4 but financially it makes sense for them to pursue a relatively lucratively career in smash 4? While they prefer melee, they are much more successful in smash 4 hence their respective pursuits of a less exciting game. How many other smash 4 players play the game because they can win their local tourneys and make money even though they aren't passionate about it? I look at all melee players and they are so devoted to their game. It is a beautiful thing. I can't help but wonder that some of the players play smash 4 because they are relatively more successful in that game as opposed to melee. I want to point this out: I don't blame them. Its business.

I guess what I am trying to do is really delve into is why people play the smash 4 version over melee. Melee is more fast paced, has more depth, has the greater storyline, and is frankly the better game. smash 4 is more recent and I understand it caters to the younger crowd who either 1) is unwilling to play a game less accessible or 2) wants to play the newer game that is easier to delve into. My thoughts for the day,

Edit: I wanted to add that I could be wrong about these assumptions. However, I can't help to feel that a lot of smash 4 players do not actually "prefer" it over melee. They choose to pursue smash 4 because, as to reiterate, it is more accessible or it is easier to succeed in because of its limited skill ceiling.

Ill be honest with you just my opinion. See SSBM is good n' all but think of the glitches ive been told countless times that the best melee player is determined by who can glitch it out the best, whereas SSB4 is more advanced hence more evenly created then SSBM i know what is trying to be created i think..... the most competitive evenly matched SSB game out there and if you ask me its succeeding.

That is no where near how the best melee player is decided. Please, if you're going to comment on the difference in popularity or decision, actually play, or follow both games.

I haven't heard top smash4 players say they prefer melee, but I also haven't asked or seeked the answer. I know back when brawl was new-ish, many brawl pros said something similar, that they didn't like the game very much, but they were good at it and made money off of it. Even many of the local best players would say that, despite not making top8 at nationals.

To answer your final question, I think people play what they enjoy. To define what you enjoy is very individual and difficult, so to make broad statements about everyone is impossible. My opinion is to let everyone play the games they like, and avoid making comparisons about what games are "better" in any subjective way. I think there are things to be enjoyed in both games, even though I only play melee myself.

I went on the smash amino app, which is 80% sm4sh content, and I asked the question: "Why do you prefer sm4sh over melee?"
To be honest, 90% of my replies were that character diversity in sm4sh is way better and that made it more fun.

I like melee's freedom and being able to do what you like and stuff.

But I don't feel like getting a melee ISO, GC emulator, and figuring out how to set up netplay. Too time-consuming. Don't feel like buying melee, GC, and GC controllers either. I could play marvel games and cyberbots for all that effort and play games with just as much freedom.

I play smash 4 because it's fun. The game IS more restricted than melee, but I don't need the game to be as free. The game gets really deep once you get really accustomed to your character. zard, on the surface, can not approach and sucks at it. But, once you realize his skid animation is reaaally fast, his turnaround animation is snappy, his jab1 and jab combo is amazing, his tilts are safe on shield, and he has a great grab game, he starts to look like a well-equipped turtling character that punishes approaches well, but can initiate some things when needed. It's the same thing as comparing marvel to street fighter; street fighter doesn't have as nearly as much options as marvel, but deep counterplay is there.

And I have my saxophone for anytime I reallly need to express myself anyway.

There must be a more underlying reason than "too time-consuming", no? I mean there are plenty of tutorials out there that could get you set up in less than an hour, and frankly any smash game deserves an hour of set up time for all that it provides, especially if it's in contention for the best game in the series.

Nah that's really it.

Don't need to setup melee when smash 4 is easily on par with it. Forget the freedom that melee offers when I have an instrument to play.

And even if I wanted to play a game that offered a ton of freedom or w/e, I'll just hop on fightcade and play the hundreds of fighting games there. Or play a different character.
