Melee does not need EVO. It has a decade+ lifespan, which is a very rare for fighting games and still has maintained a constant presence that still grows to this day.
At the same time however, EVO does not need Melee. Just because a game is popular and has a legacy does not suddenly give it veto rights to return every consistent year-3rd Strike, Super Turbo and Marvel 2/3 were also huge draws to EVO in the past but were all retired in due time too.
And let us be real here-from a general outsider standpoint donating 2/9th of the videogame slots to a single IP comes off as partially disrespectful for all the other Fighting game IPs and their communities that worked and dreamed of getting their game into EVO, much like the Smash scene did 6 years ago with that donation drive. Under-Night's community is in many ways the exact same as Skullgirls (the game that came in 2nd to Melee) and probably never imagined they would see their game in. And SamSho is one of the most respected classic Fighting Game series out there which many thought would have never had a new installment. So I'm honestly ecstatic for the new games in personally.
And on a personal level, it's probably for the best. during the time that Melee and Sm4sh were in it seemed to always devolve into **** waving contests of which game had more entrants or which one got the Sunday slot. And we don't need that crap anymore.
