Matchup Chart Project 2015 - Calling Shulk Mains!

Hello Shulk boards,

I'm Zareidriel. Over in this thread a guy called Assassannerr made a matchup chart, and asked people to help fill it out. It seems like it would be a cool thing to have. With once glance you could have a rough idea of a matchup. It won't be perfect, but for our first go at it in 2015 we're aiming for "somewhat functional."

So here's what I'm going to do. Go to every Character Discussion board, and ask the folks there if they wouldn't mind contributing. To submit one vote, you'll have to fill out one of these:

Mark each character with a - for a match where Shulk HAS THE DISADVANTAGE
Mark each character with a number 0 for a match you feel is very even.

NOTE THAT I AM ONLY TAKING VOTES FROM MEMBERS WITH Shulk IN THEIR PROFILE BAR. It can be as either "Wii U Main" or "3DS Main". But if Shulk is in neither one of those slots when I count the votes on Friday, Nov 13, it won't be counted.

(Yes, for the avid democrats out there, that means you can vote for one other character as well.)

Like I said, they won't be perfect, and each board will probably be a little biased toward their own respective character. But the results should be interesting regardless.

If this thing is successful maybe we'll do a revised version in 2016.

I don't know every match-up super well, mostly because there are some characters I just don't run into people who play them, but I'll make an effort anyway, based on my experiences. I don't know where you wanted answers posted, so I'll just reply here, then you know it's based on Shulk.

A lot of this could be that I know my skill isn't tops, so some MUs that would otherwise be in favor are merely a coinflip for me. Others, like Mii and Tink, are just not encountered by me very often.

I honestly disagree with a good number of things here. I think a fair bit of how we look at match-ups as Shulk mains is flawed because a lot of people don't understand the basic gameplan of what to do against Shulk because he's uncommon, especially half decent ones. I disagree with the following:

- Zard matchup is a losing match-up (I play both characters so I can say this with relative certainty)
- Both Fox and Falco are losing match-ups. Fox in particular still remains to be one of our worst match-ups
- Greninja is definitely a losing match-up. There's no way we beat that character.
- Mario is another losing match-up
- Pit/Dark Pit are pretty even
- Rosalina is also pretty even
- Sheik is absolutely a losing match-up. There is no way in hell this is even.
- Ryu is another absolutely losing match-up. That character is a monster.

Like I said, much of my experience is limited, mostly to people on the island or For Glory (which I try to avoid drawing judgment from). I will hand you Zard, Fox, Greninja, and Mario, as I don't know anyone who truly mains those characters. The only person who plays Zard around here is fairly meh overall. I meant to put a - by Fox, my bad, will fix. Greninja, I have 0 experience against with Shulk. I always go against him with Robin, and just outrange him hard. Mario, I basically have a 50-50 win rate against with my Shulk. On one half of the island, I usually have very close matches with one Mario player. The best Mario I've played was in my last tourney, where I had to throw out the result because I SD'd twice...

I need to study the (Dark) Pit MU better, I find myself losing more often than I win, but not by a lot. His range on tilts and smashes being slightly comparable to Shulk's trips me up... Likewise, Rosalina is tough to deal with, especially how long the dash attack lasts. I've been doing better now that I prioritize killing Luma, but it's still tough.

Ironically, I beat 90% of Sheiks I come across, especially on FG. I ran into one who gave me a very hard first match that I lost, but then I turned it around and beat that same player, despite their best combos and juggles. I guess I'll really see when I go against the island's best Sheik player tomorrow.

Ryu...? I've only ever lost one set to Ryu, and I know a pretty good player who mains him but can't touch my Shulk. I don't know, I stand by my rating on that one.

Besides, if this is vote based, won't the final results be more accurate than just my personal MU opinions?

I don't mind if you feel like you don't contribute much to the grand scheme. Like WindHero said, the more votes we get, the more accurate the final results will be, even if you feel like your own opinions are lackluster.

i think it should be worth mentioning rosalina is slightly in shulk's favor, not many people seems to know this, shulk is easily the strongest swordmen to use against rosalina, maybe tied with meta knight

Im trying to be very careful and conservative, always assumming optimal play from both sides.
There can me mistakes, 1 year is not enough time for this and characters are still developing day by day and some faster than others.

Shulk struggles against:
- Very rushdown (like sheik, unlike cap falcon), not hit and run like sonic, both can play that game -speed and jump-.
- Fast projectiles zoners (like megaman, Rob, Olimar, but not Robin)

Shulk has advantage against:
- Short ranged characters (like Mr game and watch, kirby or wii fit trainer)
- Light Characters -smash art- (like jigglypuff and Mr game and watch)

Shulk goes even because:
His arts let him adapt most of the time, if he has -1 disadvantage is just because no art is able to overcome his weakensses.
