for a while now i've been having a really hard time dealing with marth and i've got to the point where i'm absolutely furious when i just see him come up against me. this also applies for sword characters in general.

i use wario which is always going make this type of matchup hard anyway, but i was just wondering what are the keys weaknesses or ways of beating marth and what characters would make good counters?

the advice can be in general rather than character specific

cheers

Well, yeah, Wario generally suffers from his lack of range.
Marth's weaknesses are, in short, his mediocre frame data, his lack of safe landing options, and a pretty bad disadvantaged state.
Wario doesn't really abuse any of those (but still he is able to win, the matchup is just very uphill), but fast combo-based characters do, like Sheik or Diddy.

One of Marth's biggest weaknesses is having to deal with pressure. He is great at keeping an opponent away from him, but once they get past your defense you don't have a lot of options other than up b which can be very risky to try to go for.

- Lots of windows of opportunity to capitalize on due to the high endlag of his sword moves & low active hitbox frames since swords move in arcs
- Doesn't have a way to force opponents to approach him
- No great landing options
- Doesn't have "real" multi-hit moves (Nair & Dancing Blades are the only things that would fit this category, but Nair only has 2 hits while Dancing Blades has large periods of downtime in between slashes & can be punished with a shield + low-frame attack if timed properly)
- Doesn't have many moves that pull his hurtbox back enough when attempting an attack (unlike characters like Pikachu's or Captain Falcon's FSmash)
- No true throw combos after low percentages

Marth hates characters with good Frame Data. A curious case is Mario, which Mario mains will love to tell you Marth has a the advantage on Marth due to disjoints and range. However once Mario gets in, he's very VERY difficult to shake away and will end up with serious damage if not the stock.
We don't have an attack that can interrupt combos other than Up-Special, which is gimmicky, predictable and heavily punishable. Even our jab can be beaten up close by other jabs, and can be punished easily of blocked. Marth doesn't has an attack that he can just "throw out" and be safe either.
Sword Dance is actually quite difficult to make a true combo, specially in online matches and if you block or escape any one attack in the string chances are you can punish.
If the player in your mind is a friend or someone you know, just get him inpatient and he's done for.
