So I came home from a tourney and was recording my replays when I found one that wasn't me playing. A Samus vs a Mario, the mario does a down throw and samus tech rolls it on impact with the ground.

Since when was this possible and why have I NEVER seen it done before? I watch a lot of pro smash, and have never seen anyone do it, surely this is insanely useful when versing Mario?

That happened because the down throw was performed near the ledge, thus the collision was detected on Battlefield's wall instead of the ground. In other words, the Samus player teched the impact on the wall. You can't tech Mario's down throw on the ground.
