Ive been jumping using the X button and its been screwing up my combos. I have heard of people using the Y button or joystick instead. I have been working with both and havent figured out which one of the three is the best choice in jumping / SH's. Is it just preference or is their an advantage in using a certain one?

It's a preference.

If you're having trouble you're probably not using the C-stick. That's what I use for aerial combos. Just work on it and you'll have it down pat.

Personally, I use X to jump because how conveniently the A button is placed right next to it where my thumb is, but it's all up to you and what feels the most natural.

I use the X button for jumping. And when I use b-air I use the A button as well, because it's much much easier to double back air in a short hop with the A button.

I the c-stick for other aerials though, just a weird habit?

very true.
if im going for a double bair. i slide my thumb from the bottom of the x button onto the A button, but for the 2nd i use the C-Stick so i can DI according to how the situation plays out.
i use cstick for all my aerials also tho. only because i can DI while getting the move i want out at the same time

I noticed that too. That its easier to do a double back air with A button rather than c stick? Dont understand it but w/e. I've realized that C-stick is the way to go for the other aerials, I just need to time my SH's better so i can fast fall out of a n-air and b-air with ease.

Playing Brawl until I have a seizure, nah im kiddin
I use Y,the tip of my thumb sits on the Y button, and the middle part that bends stays over the A button, I dont even have to move my thumb much, just bend it so that it hits the A button, I find X awkward for me,but using the C-stick for aeials proves challenging considering the Y button is further away from the C-stick when compared to the X button
I would'nt recomend the joy stick, but thats just me,just try all 3 way's and see which one fits you best

Well I guess I'm super weird for rising up-air I use Y, but for back airs I use X, for nairs I use R. Also, I don't feel comfortable using the c-stick with my aerials. Only thing i use the c-stick for is Mario's sexy down-smash as that is the quickest way to pull it out.
