I'm going to be entering a tag team tournament in a couple of weeks and me and my partner are still debating who we should use. His best characters are Diddy Kong, Luigi, and Donkey Kong. My best characters are Wario, Ness, and Mario. With that being said, I was thinking of having Mario and Luigi team up. Is this a good idea? If so, what are some good strategies that we could use?

well... mario has feirce edguard while luigi can't edguard for crap.
mario can combo like a maniac but doesn't have any really low % killing moves
luigi has firepunch and fair and the missle attack

luigi cannot approach all that well while mario has fireballs and fludd
mario can reflect projectiles/attacks

<forgive me if i have anything wrong about luigi since i only used him in melle and not in brawl>

they pretty much complement each other's weaknesses making one super balanced team .....

Mario & Luigi is the best combination out of the characters you mentioned but basically Mario will be a support character for Luigi.

Here are some tips:

*Use Mario and Luigi's fireballs to control approach*

*Use Mario's F.L.U.D.D. to set-up Luigi's attacks and provide some extra spacing*

*Mario & Luigi's aerials combo fairly well in combination with each other and can easily be abused*

My tag team is usually Mario & Snake but it takes a lot of practice to stay in sync with each other.

You might want to use someone with a better projectile game.

I mean Mario's fireball is decent but it's not amazing.

Well, I'd like us both to use characters that we main and, because my partner isn't as "versitile" as I am, I don't want to force him to use characters that he doesn't normally use. For example, I thought of doing a Ness and Lucas team up but Lucas' playstyle is completely different from the characters he uses on a regular basis: Mario, Luigi, Dedede, DK, Diddy, and Wario. My mains are Wario, Ness, Mario, Ice Climbers, Metaknight, and Fox but I can use just about any character decently. Still, I'd prefer to use one of the six above. I also don't feel like resorting to a combination that could be considered "cheap" like Pikachu and Game and Watch using constant bucket spam.

King DeDeDe has a pretty good projectile.

I was told that King Dedede was usually bad in teams because people instinctively go after the large/heavy characters first. Dedede's great at keeping people back in 1 on 1 matches but I don't think he could effectively stave off two people at once. Obviously, I would be there to help but if I get knocked away, he's pretty much SOL because of how slow he is.

it is a pretty good team but it all really depends on HOW you play these certain characters
