I don't know if this helps but, there is a certain timing, but it's hard to explain. You just need to try out different timings and try to close in on the right one. It should feel like one fluent motion and you need to have it in you fingers, because there's obvoiusly not enough time to think about each input.

I believe you have a 4 frame window to press the direction after you press B.
