You guys know when you try to DD and sometimes it just makes your character switch directions over and over instead of dashing, why does this happen?

I assume it's because you get stuck in the turn animation, unable to dash, causing you to buffer another turn.

I'm probably wrong tho.

-pressing the control stick halfway through will make you perform a tilt pivot, a new type of pivot specific to PM. It cancels your dash animation into the turn around animation
-pressing back during the turnaround animation will make you perform another turnaround animation. Si if you dash dance and you accidentally do a tilt pivot, you'll be stuck in a cycle of turnarounds until you stop dash dancing.

Basically you're doing an AT without knowing about it and it's screwing you up. Make sure you always push the stick all the way when dash dancing and it should fix the problem.

Tilt pivots are the best
At neutral it's just a better, more reliable version of WD back with no start-up and less endlag
Although characters like fox/samus with quick start-up and good distance WDs might still have WDs that are as good in that situation.
But for characters like Ganon/ROB/Bowser/Ike/etc who have either really bad WDs or just better dashes than their WD, this is a godsend

So how is this purposely performed and what is the application of it? I main Ike so perhaps this pertains to me.

It's performed by dashing in one direction and tilting the control stick slightly in the other direction as quickly as you can (but it can't be a smash-input).
The purpose is the same thing you would use a WD back-> tilt for: to quickly make space for your opponent to whiff an attack against you, then being able to quickly fill that space with a hitbox should they occupy that space. But using tilt pivots is better than using WD back, when it's available.

I tried using that input and would end up just doing a dash attack

You don't have to press A silly
Besides, if you're getting a dash attack, it means you're pressing too hard on the control stick the second time, making you go into a dash, followed by pressing A causing a dash attack
Just practice doing it without an attack. You'll know you did It right if your character stops, turns around, and just stands there.
