Local multiplayer tournament trouble

Just played at the Xanadu and everyone is having lag problems. I wonder how the Japanese held their local tournaments. I think it's just too many active 3dses in one place. Any theories or suggestions?

We just had the same problem last weekend, we decided to play finals in a small quiet room away from all the other systems and it was mostly lagless, but still not perfect. It was actually because of the lag that we didn't get to record finals I too would be interested in any advice people can offer other than just moving away from and switching off as many wireless devices as possible.
