I like it quite a bit. It reminds me very much of a certain song whose name I can't remember.

The only thing I can think of to make it better would be to make the snare drum that comes in in measure 5 to be a bit lower pitched. The one you're using almost sounds a bit whiny to me.

I understand you want to keep your two-bar phrase in the right channel going untouched throughout the whole thing, but I think that with a beat this long, you can definitely mix it up a bit.

Also, this probable goes in another sub-forum. Like artwork emporium or something?

I liked it, but that beat never really went anywhere. It just started, went on for a long time, then stopped. There was a few small inclusions to it, but they where pretty faint and uninteresting.

I was thinking of doing that, but unfortunately, I didn't save the project.. my program is really messed up, and it's the full version.

Aww, too bad. You had a nice beat there, too.

I've never tried FL Studio (I used FruityLoops once, though). There are a few open source studios that I use off and on: Rosegarden (for Linux only, I believe, and is also a very nice sequencer) and Ardour (also only Linux). LMMS (another Linux one) is still in Alpha, I think, but it's coming along nicely. You may want to check those out if you're not pleased with FL Studio. But it seems you'll need to make a Linux installation.

But do whatever you want. I'd bet that you're more experienced with making loops than I am.

No.
Don't make beats. Make music. And don't use the ugly presets like citrus or whatever. Download vst's and whatnot, or get Rebirth. Also get formal music training, with focus in theory + composition.

I don't. I'm just assuming. Or at least that you aren't very far down the line.

No.
Don't make beats. Make music.
Are you saying that making beats is a useless endeavor that should always be overlooked in favor of real music? The whole point of a beat is for atmosphere, or as a backup for a melody. Practically every pop song has a fairly consistent "beat"; you add a sung melody, and you have a song.

Also, I don't know why you're bashing his knowledge of music theory. It's not really necessary to know the chords to make a rather simple, good-sounding beat like his.

EDIT: Please note that I have a habit of defending anyone who asks for advice to improve and gets discouraging generalizations of his or her inadequacies.

No. I told him not to make beats. You just wildly assumed the negative.

OH REALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not. I'm telling him to sharpen it.

His beat is very simple, yes, but it does not sound good. You should definitely know a thing or two about music composition if you want to make it. He has what I'm assuming is a silly i VI V progression on a baaaaad instrument over poor percussion. Whether he knew that I can't say, but it doesn't matter. Either way it's clear that the "beat" needs a lot more work done on it.

I have a tendency to do battle with ignorance.

Also: discouraging generalizations? Hah. I answered his question, gave him advice, and I didn't generalize one bit.

Just so you know guys, I have a feeling that Lesheik is getting discouraged by the feedback he's gotten. Instead of telling him specific things to work on, some of us have said, "learn music theory" and "I don't like your instruments". Of course, that doesn't really help him.

If you want to help people, you have to be aware of the emotional impact you make on them. Complimenting them on things they did well and giving them very specific things to improve on is the best way to help someone improve a skill.

Lesheik, don't read the blacked out text (seriously, don't give in to curiosity):
Obviously, Lesheik's beat needs quite a bit of work, but telling him that to his face is not helpful. He could also use some real knowledge of music theory, but again, saying "learn music theory" is not helpful.
Learning the theory goes hand-in-hand with learning to compose music; it's not a prerequisite.

Also, I'm such a dork in this post.

So telling him what he needs to work on is not helpful. k.

"learn music theory" -> "hmm guess I should take a class or something"
"I don't like your instruments" -> "hmm maybe I should change them"

He's not a five year old. He can take some criticism. If not he needs to grow a pair. Women and wussy men speak in huge euphemisms and say what they don't mean.
Telling him "hey man fantastic ****ing job you should take it to Rilling seriously" is not going to get him anywhere.

Hey, you know what, joshisrad? You're totally right. I take back everything I said that you disagree with.
