Lets roll out the Barrel, lets have a Barrel of fun....

Today’s update (The 14th for those reading in time machines) is all about the most iconic of all videogame items, the barrel and crate. Lets face it, there’s almost no game that they havent been in, (Pong and Pacman excepted) and in Smash, they’re back yet again, albiet with a new twist or two…

Sakurai and co have decided to update the barrels and crates in 2 rather different ways.

<strong>First Change:</strong> Notice how in Melee, capsules never appeared in any Yoshi level, and instead Eggs appeared? Well they’ve taken that little change and made it affect the crates and barrels, so now they match the environment too. If you’re on a Space themed level like Starfox, you’ll get metalic crates, and likewise on the twee themed stages, like Yoshi, you get some pretty big gift-wrapped boxes.

<strong>Second Change:</strong> Anyone ever see on Corneria when a barrel appears on the top of the tail fin, the barrel rolls down, and if you’re unfortunate enough to get in the way while it’s rolling, you get hit? It’s back, but a little different. Instead of rolling, it slides down. While not too earth shattering in itself, the fact that you can <em>ride</em> the sliding crate is a nice little addition. Why grab a crate and get hit mid-throw, when you can jump on it and ram someone with it?

That sliding crate and barrel thing would help start a combo, first you jump on it while it rams into someone when it slides, then you attack them like crazy. Lol, it just keeps getting better and better for Brawl.

I cant wait for brawl, i like that the crates change especially the presents. YAY!

You know, I think that the sliding crates are a different item from the regular crates. Look at the picture: you can see wheels. The picture of the crate alone and the metallic crate, as well as the present not shown here, don’t have wheels.

I dont think the barrel has wheels only the crate. “Why get a cab when you can ride a crate”.

I hope you can ride the barrels ala the way Diddy and Dixies could. That would be funny, though I doubt possible. (If it was it would probably have been in this update._

Be interesting-I wouldn’t put it past Sakurai and them…I’m LOVIN’ what they’ve been showing us-even the barrels and crates have some innovation now! I love the sci-fi theme the most.

I think it’s pretty sweet that the crates are physics objects this time around (ie, you can stand on and push them) rather than just items that you pick up and throw. I hope barrels get the same upgrade!

it would be cool if u could jump on and go for a ride and be invincible till the barrels life meter empties, but i think its pretty cool anyway.

Yeah, as its been said, there are coasters on the crate. The crate is not sliding, it’s rolling, and it more than likely won’t be with every crate that pops up.
