Smash Journeyman
The title says it all. The upcoming VGC allows teams of four with a maximum of 2 Ubers. Here we go:
Kingdra (Adamant) [Lum Berry]
Ability: Swift Swim
- Waterfall
- Outrage
- Dragon Dance
- Bounce/Substitute
EVs: 252 Atk, 252 Spe, 4 HP
Kyogre (Modest) [Life Orb]
Ability: Drizzle
- Hydro Pump
- Ice Beam
- Thunder
- Earthquake/Hidden Power Ground
EVs: 252 SpA, 160 HP, 140 Spe
Ludicolo (Calm) [Leftovers]
Ability: Rain Dish
- Leech Seed
- Grass Knot
- Protect
- Toxic
EVs: 252 HP, 40 Def, 216 SpD
Lugia (Nature Undecided) [Damp Rock]
Ability: Pressure
- Rain Dance
- Roost
- Psychic
- Calm Mind/Thunder/Earth Power/Punishment
EVs: Undecided; will most likely be HP and Speed oriented
Strategy: Kingdra and Kyogre come out first, covering each others backs with one being a physical sweeper and the other special. Bounce may seem like an odd option on Kingdra, but that is only to avoid Earthquake (besides the fact that its physical movepool isn't that great). However, I guess Substitute could do that, AND give it room to DDance. As for EQ, that is only there to smite the apparent Electric weakness, despite Kyogre's nature. Also, it would be nice to have something that allows me to scout the speed order of the battle. Being my first serious doubles team, I found out that the types you use with rain aren't really as flexible as, say, Sandstorm, but I already put a good bit of thought into this... (What I mean is that it's hard finding good rain candidates that aren't all weak against the same thing).
Btw, if the opponent cancels out the rain with another weather effect, should I just stay and fight, or swap Kyogre out with Lugia and reenforce the weather? Which is the wiser option of the two?
The Ludicolo set is a pretty straightforward supporter. However, I was also curious as to whether I should give him Rain Dance in the last slot in case something happens to Lugia or Kyorge.
Now, let's get to my biggest worry - Lugia. I realized that I needed a fast, bulky, rain-oriented Poke who could switch in to most anything to put the rain back in case the opponent has another weather effect. Lugia fits the bill, and although it does not benefit from the rain as much as its fellow comrades do, it still makes a good offensive/defensive force for backup. The only problem is that I have nothing to super-effectively hit Dark- and Ghost-types. The last slot presents some good options, all of which are hard to choose between. The last slot will help me finalize the set. Which should I pick, or is there something better altogether that I can put in place of Lugia?
Basically, I appreciate any sort of feedback that I can get. I really need it. I haven't been to a doubles tourney since '06, and I'm not really crazy about doubles, but I love to compete. So please rate and comment!
