That phrase is used occasionally in the show, but not that commonly, either.
It's honestly a bit misleading...I thought the show was about human girls and their ponies because of it, if I recall rightly.

The MLP franchise has been around for years but has gone through different generations that have little to no relation to one and other, and it's included shows for it's various gens.

The show of the current gen is quite different from previous ones. I do believe most previous shows had humans and ponies involved in the same world, though.

Pinkie Pie as a pegasus would be hilarious...but Fluttershy as an Earth pony would make her lose her interesting "different from her own race" aspect.

Yeah, I've read about that. AJ looks like the only one who would've been the same as she is now.

They didn't have the rights to Firefly, I know that much. I think the name Sparkler is sometimes applied to a certain background Pony (though most now call said background Pony by the name "Amethyst Star". Not sure about the rest of them...)

There's also one member of the Wonderbolts with a similar coloration to Surprise.

Also, I've heard a few times that Bronies existed for G1 (and still do) as well. Not like they called themselves by that nickname at the time it was first around, though. As for G3, I've heard most people say it's show just existed to commercialize the toys and it was bland and uncreative.

Though it does look like the hair coloration and pattern originally intended for Sparkler ended up getting used for Twilight Sparkle instead.

Twilight's old hair colors also look kind of similar to the hair coloration that was used for her mother. Most of the colors ended up getting changed completely but it seems they did reuse a few of them.

Again, it looks like Applejack would've been the only one exactly the same as she is now. Twilight still had the same name but with different colors, Fluttershy had the same colors but lacked her wings and had a different name, and the rest were all almost completely different from how they are now...

Personally, I think their personalities seem mostly intact, if we look only at their poses.
Surprise looks happy and full of laughter like Pinkie,
Firefly looks ready to take on anything like Rainbow Dash,
Sparkler looks refined and beautiful like Rarity,
AJ looks like herself from everything expect the hat,
Posey, well, she looks a little less shy than normal, but still retains some of it,
and Twilight looks friendly as always.
