Least lag Melee setup for college dorm?

Hey, this is my first thread, so here goes. I'm going to be starting college next month and I want to bring my Wii with me, mainly to play Melee and some Project M. I want to be able to play with as low lag as possible but space/money needs to be considered. Can't buy one of those lagless Asus monitors.

The things I could bring are one of two monitors, one Hannspree HSG1053 one Acer P191W, or an LCD TV Vizio va19l.

Also, I would need a cord for either Wii to HDMI or component to VGA.

What are my best options?

Only real lagless play comes on a CRT, sorry bub.
I know, I'm not aiming for lagless, I just want to find the best of what I have.

Ok, simpler question, which has less lag, hdmi or vga and what cord should I buy?

Maybe I'll get a crt later if I meet enough Melee people.

I don't know.

Lag is lag so when you eventually switch to a CRT you're going to run into timing problems. You can stop that from even happening though by just getting a CRT to begin with. It may not look sexy but damn does it work.

I know, I play on CRT at home, but for a small dorm it isn't feasible. My room is around 6 and a half feet wide and even a small CRT is about a foot deep so there isn't much room. I just want to know if it's better to use HDMI with a TV or VGA with a monitor, and what type of cord I should buy. Also the car is already going to be packed so bringing a CRT is not possible.

What college are you going to, btw?

University of Pittsburgh.

Take the visio, IMO. The internet says it has a 5ms response time (1 frame = ~17ms). This doesn't always hold true when using RWY cable (the TV has to do some work which causes lag), but if you have the Wii component cables (RGB) and the TV allows it, use that.

When I went to college I brought a TV I used as a monitor and also for games (Xbox360 and GameCube). It isn't the best monitor and it had ~2 frames of lag when I played melee (hard to tell when playing anything else), but it worked well for my dorm situation. Your Visio reminds me of the TV I used (Sharp Aquos 720p), so I think you would do okay with it.

I was serious about melee before I went to the dorms, so eventually I did do what others are saying and pick up a CRT (i kept it in my closet and brought it out only when needed). There were a lot of people throwing CRTs away for whatever reason (especially near semester end), so if you're interested, keep an eye open.

Thanks for the help! Also, yeah, I tried the Vizio a bit earlier today and it worked really well for Smash and some NES games. It ran NES games much smoother than my Insignia on virtual console games. Also, I was just using the RWY cables for my GC and it worked well, but I have the Wii component cables so I'll try those out as well.

The TV calls the side composite ports the "game ports" so I guess it automatically puts it in a gaming mode, not sure.

Composite already is a digital signal, so the TV doesn't have to do any conversions before displaying. I have no experience with them, but from what i've heard it should virtually eliminate lag (for the same reasons HDMI cords are relatively lagless).
