I am trying to learn the shorthop, since I have become feed up of knowing advance techniques, yet being unable to perform them (I kinda of lurk the forum). I find I am more consistent short hopping using the analog stick, but I have a some questions: First, should I learn to short hop using the button or not; second, If I use the analog is it a bad thing I can only seem to perform the my air attack using the C-stick except for neutral air; third, I haven't been working on my L-canceling since I am finding short hop and attacking hard enough should I start working on it or learn piece by piece; lastly, I am working on my using short hop while pressure so I verse comps while working on my short hop (lvl 4 seems the level at which I can compete against them using short hop anything higher than that and I stop focusing on short hopping and start on just winning using my bad habits), is that a good idea or is it slowing me down in term of making my short hop second nature.

sorry for the length.

While i know someone who SH's with the control stick, i think that it is definitively better to use x/y because you get full control of where you are going in the air. It's unecessarily difficult to sh out of a run (either forward or backward) and do an aerial, esp. nairs. so using a button gives you better control of movement than the stick. If you're having trouble, try sliding your thumb off the bottom of the x button as quickly as you can. I've taught 1/2 dozen ppl this method in person, and every one of them was shff ing in days.

Edit: and only really practice against lvl 1s becuase anything else will get you in bad habbits. even lvl 1s do if you're not practicing something very specific that isn't DI dependant.

I too had the problem of short hopping consistently until today, since I kept trying to just press the y button really fast. Unfortunately, my fingers are not that fast yet, but I read about sliding your finger off the x button in another thread (it's quite possible that scotu was the one who mentioned it), and I can basically short hop almost everytime now. It's harder to use the sliding method with the y button due to it's placement imo.

How I do the sliding method is taking my thumb and sliding it to the right really quickly away from the A button. I can still move my thumb fast enough to either hit A for the n-air or the c-stick for other aerials. I prefer using the c-stick for my aerials because it is more consistent for me.

Well, this may be a stretch, but maybe Fox isn't the character for you.Fox requiers extremely fast fingers to work with. Not to mention after you learn the basic advanced techniques, you have to deal with the shine and working that into your gameplay.but don't give up hope, for I have a few reccomendations:

1.Do you have a secondary that isn't a fast faller? If so,I reccomend that you play with that character to learn the basic gist of the advanced techniques. If you can master the basics, then you can move on to another character and learn the specific functions of the character.

2.LEARN TO L-CANCEL BEFORE ANYTHING!!! I can't stress how important this is,it is the most important technique in the game(Or close to it).Mastering this technique at first may seem difficult, but eventually it'll become second nature.

3.Watch all 3 of Wak's Advanced How To Play Video's.This will help you greatly, and is reccomended that every new member watches these. This video also helped me out as well by watching the finger movements.

4.Have patience. These techniques may seem difficult at first, but they will become easy eventually.Just remember that you can't emulate a professional player just by looking at the video's(Even though you can learn from them).

5.Don't even try to play like Zelgadis in shined blind.

Good luck.:)

oh, yeah, don't try to play fox just for tech tricks, cause it'll put you on a hard to fix road (speakin from experience here). Basically use fox for his speed, his lasers (for pressure/ game control), his shine for a fast move, and his usmash for KOs. Don't try to force gimps/ shine spikes, there's usually a better thing to do. Don't just learn a bunch of flashy techniques/ movement and try to put together a game based on that. Didn't work for me, won't work for you. like Eternal phoenix fire said, zelgadis is a good player, but his vids highligh tech stuff that isn't the best to use in a competitive situation. Keep in mind that combo vids are for entertainment, not for learning skillz. to learn, watch matches, especially sets of games that form a tourney match. Basically, if you see it in my vid, zelgadis vids, or other vids, don't try it until you're already a strong fox player, and win w/ flashy stuff. just play the game to win, not to be flashy. That's my 2 cents. and yeah, learn to L cancel asap, cause it's universal (works the same for all characters, w/ exception only for G&W) and it's extremely important. missed l cancels lose matches.

Quick thing I want to add: If you watch full matches with Zelgadis, he plays NOTHING like his combo videos. He is definitely a smart fox player, and he doesn't do as much of the flashy technical stuff as his videos would suggest. From his real matches, I actually believe that Zelgadis relies more on smarts then technical skills.

If you use the analog stick to short hop, you're going to run into problems later when it comes to things like waveshining and shffling. Start learning how to short hop with the X/Y buttons.

in addition, if youre looking to get better (i agree with scotu on the stuff he said, along the the other forum members) look at chillin's fox, kdj's fox and m2k's recent fox vids. Youll notice subtle differences in the way they play but remember to pick a style that works for you.

Thank you all for the input. I try the slide method and see go from there. As far playing other character goes the only other character I played a bit of was peach but that just to screw around with the down smash of hers. Thanks for the video I will give them a try.

start L-cancelling first then shothop. To do the shorthop, ma, you just be easy ad do it slowly first, then try to do it faster and faster, and therw ull go..

I SH with the control stick >_>. You people say its harder but that is only because you jump with X. I jump with all of the jump buttons without a problem it is just a matter of being used to it.

as i look to go quote myself, i found it wasn't in this thread, but i've on multiple times said that i jump w/ x, y, control up, c-up out of shield. I didn't say it was harder to do, i just said that it's easier to control yourself in the air when you're starting to do it.
