Leader boards

Would it be possible for a system of points to be used in making a leader board?
Ex:
Sally-
Kills:7
Deaths-2
(Need moar)

The kills would cancel deaths out, like 2 deaths and 3 kills =1. The points collected then are transferred onto a world-wide leader board. There could be leaders for the week, month, year, and All time.

That sounds to competeive for Sakurai's liking..if anything there could be a combat record displays stats...but i severly doubt leaderboards..expecially the type you suggested - no offense just my opnion on it.

All the best online games use division based systems.

If you're looking at stats of your aggregate total of games then it will not properly reflect the amount that you have improved.
If it's division based then you can see how good you currently are based on which division you are able to reach and stay in.

Online FIFA games do this brilliantly.

Say you start in division 10. You play ten games. If you win at least 6/10 then you move up to division 9.
In division 9 you play 10 games and if you win 6/10 you go to division 8. However if you win less than 4 games you go back down to division 10.
etc etc etc.

Also, it allows you to be matched up with players of similar skill level once you reach the division you belong in instead of being whooped all the time or finding most people too easy.

IF Sakurai wants to make the game slightly competitive, I can see this happening in the 3DS version.

Interesting. Can you please evaluate on that?
Neanderthal summed up my thoughts pretty well.

Actually, seeing that Mario Kart 7 and Mario Golf are having an online ranking system, I kind of expect it to happen for Smash 3DS as well.

Leader boards encourages people to be competitive. I think in multiple occasions sakurai said he wanted gameplay to be fun and with no strings attached. Worrying about KD ratios would put a damper on casual enjoyment.

What's interesting is that you can see it happen on 3DS, but not the Wii U version of the game.

That's the beatuy of division based online play.

You can play it competitively if you want and try to get to the highest division, or you can screw around at the bottom divisions trying new characters WITHOUT any damage to your record.

You can always just start trying your hardest again later and work your way back up.
There's no need to keep a record of wins and losses but competitive play is still really fun.

I believe that Would be the best time to implement smash points lile that hadn melee for style such. That way it could be a fun experience also there should be class locks so to not have any newcomers feel treated especially when they find someone bette than them.

Kid Icarus Uprising has something like that already. I don't see Smash Bros. lacking it. However, it only shows how many games you have played and how many you won, no losses.

Can you explain to us why the 3DS version should have leaderboards then?
The 3DS version is supposed to be a personal experience, so having a online ranking board will make it similar to pokémon. The main experience is single-player, but online multiplayer has big part as well.

Why I don't think there would be one for the Wii U is because there can be multiple users in a single game, so it can possibly lead to problems.

I'd guess it'd either display only your wins, so people don't get discouraged; that guy with 300 wins may have lost 6,000 matches for example, or just allow you to view other peoples records section.

You know that a game can have different kinds of leaderboards, right? A game can also have more than one game mode, even for online gameplay.

With a 1vs1 mode, there can be a leaderboard. For games with multiple users in a single game, there doesn't necessarily have to be one.

Although I can't see a reason why not. Of course there can be a leaderboard for 4 players FFA. For instance, it could be based on how many times you have come in first, second, third and fourth place.

Personally, I prefer a rating system. It is arguably the best system for competitive online gaming.

I'd love multiple leader boards. With Mario kart 7(somewhat), Golf and what ever else was announced I would expect Smash to follow suit. The thing is though, Sakurai gave his direct thoughts about leader boards during Brawl development remember?

He said something along the lines of not wanting people to see how much lower their score could potentially be against the millions of players out there. I hope his ideals have changed but I'm not counting on it.

Edit: Man I hate typing from an iPad. My grammar is worse than usual.

If this is true, I guess we won't see any leaderboards in Smash 4. I understand that view; it can be tough for the bad players to see exactly how bad they are in comparison with so many players.

Push them to get better if they cared enough?

A ranking system is needed, but a leaderboard isn't.
A ranking system without leaderboards?

Good one.

I am aware that's the case for some games and it has worked okay. MKWii for example. But with a good rating system, leaderboards come naturally.

That's the most reasonable reaction, but nowadays it seems like Nintendo think that a majority of gamers are babies that can't handle a challenge.

Games aren't what they used to be, at least for Nintendo.

It is indeed a shame...

Here is some info from a GDC interview years ago. It's the 2nd question that is on topic. As for the first segment I posted below, at least we are almost guaranteed voice chat!

IGN: Brawl seems like the perfect game to introduce a Wii headset for voice chat. Why have you avoided this?

Masahiro Sakurai: Well, when I first started making Smash Bros. Brawl, I thought it would be wonderful if online battles between friends had voice chat and potentially keyboard based chat as well. But there are all sorts of rules and regulations regarding communication on the Wii platform and so it was apparent to me that it just wouldn't come together, we weren't going to be able to do it, so we decided to cancel that feature. I'm very sorry about that. But if you're really desperate for it, you could set up Skype by your game station and go at it with a friend if you like.

IGN: Smash Bros. is a very competitive series, but you have avoided detailed online stat tracking and leader board ranking systems for Brawl. Why is that?

Masahiro Sakurai: Well, I'm sure that people hitting ranks one through 10, were there such a ranking system, would be incredibly pleased with it and having a lot of fun. But, you know, it's not fun for everybody involved per se if such a system were to exist. I was asked this time around to try and get Wi-Fi into the game and so certainly we've managed to get wireless battles so you can play with people in other places. But it's really a game in my mind that has been designed to be played with a smaller group of people -- be that a group of friends or within your house a group of family members -- competing in the small circles and not really worrying about winning and losing so much as the process that gets you there. That is where the fun should hopefully be for a lot of people. It can also be kind of trying and painful for some people who want to be at the top and think that they're really good at Smash and they look at their online ranking and they're the one-hundred-thousandth best Smash Bros. player -- those are some of the reasons I've decided not to go with leader boards.

Let's just hope his gaming philosophies have changed. How did things work in Kid Icarus?

A ranking system similar to Tekken Tag Tournament 2 would be interesting. One part ranks each character, showing who are the top 200 players with each character. The other part of course ranks everyone playing the game.

However, there is a ranked search where ranking/points are taken into consideration while free search allows for casual play where players do not have to worry about losing points. Even in ranked match you are allowed to choose if you want to play people of a similar rank or any rank. I think if Sakurai implemented that it would be good for all players.
