"Last-Minute" Characters

So we all know about how there were a few characters in Brawl who almost didn't make the cut. As a result they either weren't in the SSE or just kinda scraped into it. The point is, they were added later in the development than the rest. What I want you guys to speculate is: Who could be the last-minute characters for Super Smash Bros. 4? This could be characters with less development priority, or characters that were introduced into their series later in development, or something like that.


My personal want? Lana, from Hyrule Warriors

Well, I don't think there are going to be any last minute characters this time. Sakurai is obviously making a big deal out of newcomers, giving them completely new movesets, a CGI trailer, and add the fact that there are two games instead of one (with different release dates too.) Even a supposed "last minute character" would take a lot more time than Brawl.

As for Lana..., your only hope is that she was in the initially planned roster, which is horribly unlikely since her game isn't even out yet.

I think a few veterans will be last minute that they had less priority to Sakurai than others. Possibly Wolf again, and Jigglypuff. It's hard to say, though.

Edit: disregard this post, I thought that this was about characters that WOULDN'T make it into the game due to lack of development time, like how the Villager was originally planned for Brawl.

Lana and Inkling are characters that will have a better chance being a DLC character down the line though. Neither of their respective games will be out for fans to even get acquainted with the character. It could be a "Roy" situation though who knows.

If last minute characters were to happen in smash 4, I would say mewtwo. However sakurai already said in a very recent interview that the roster was solidified long before the game reached full development. So all the characters that get it where planned from the beginning and no time after.

I don't think he wants to delay the game for last minute characters like sonic was in brawl

I'm pretty sure development time ran out due to having to put extra resources towards Sonic near the end of Brawl's production cycle. That was also the reason behind the game getting delayed.

Any character that might have been intended to be cut could be salvaged if Sakurai chooses to delay the game and do the whole "eleventh hour" character thing again. Jigglypuff was an example of that in Brawl. Lucas or Wolf (characters I feel are teetering on the brink of retirement) could make a glorious return in this manner.

As for new characters, like Toon Link and Wolf were, they would probably be derivative, "semi-clone" characters like Alph to Olimar, Daisy to Peach, and (please Sakurai!) Emolga to Pikachu.

Last minute characters usually don't have a moveset built from the ground. Mewtwo would be a rather simple addition because of his already existing moveset, Dixie Kong could be a semi-clone of Diddy, but I can't really think of any other characters than those that could get into the roster with this method.

There will be last-minute characters, they will be clones, and most people will complain about them despite that they would have come at the expense of just one unique character.

If you want a good game, you won't want them trying to design characters last minute.

Design, rendering, programming, testing and balancing properly will take months, since you want to get feedback for how the character operates in the greatest range of environments, and if you add a character way after everyone else has to be done, you probably have to gut the UI and whatnot.

They learned their lesson from Brawl. That's why Mr. Sakurai has been emphasizing deciding a roster from the start and trying to stick to it. No game in history has ever gone as planned so I don't doubt there have been many changes, but I would be so bold as to state 2014 was the cut-off for new characters.

I don't see anything wrong with people wanting Lana in the game. People are entitled to their own opinion, and wanting Lana isn't unreasonable at all. She's a new character, but she's still a character from one of Nintendo's biggest franchises. (although a spin-off)

Yeah I know it's pretty unlikely, but I'm just saying she's my hope for a Zelda newcomer.
But hey we all know Sakurai gets inside info before others, like Roy for Melee, and now Greninja (possibly)

If there absolutely has to be a last-minute character, Snek or bust.

It's really not possible to add last minute characters. Brawl's "Forbidden 7" would have been decided in early production, but not worked on due to time constraints. The same is likely to be true for Smash 4; loads of characters will have been selected, and given a priority order.

Every few weeks, they'll come to a milestone and make the call to work on the next character (or batch of characters) or not. Chances are the last call comes a good few months before release, though.

If you believe the Gematsu leak, it's possible those characters are from the most recent batch before April; it's entirely plausible new characters could have been added since then, but they would have all been chosen over a year ago.

Last minute characters, if even possible, are completely and utterly difficult to implement. If anyone is possible at all, it would definitely be Inkling. There's no way Lana would even deserve to make it, regardless of time before release.

Why on earth would Mewtwo be last minute? He was talked about in the context of Smash at e3 2013. And even WHYer, Lana totally deserves a spot?
