So I can L-Cancel pretty much everything without fail without hitting people but as soon as they bring up their shield or they just get hit it slows my momentum down. Can anyone tell me how long I should wait before I fastfall and L-cancel or If I should do it faster. I feel like I would be so much faster and my shield pressure would get a lot better once I get this down.

Marth's main shield pressure tactics are grabs and of course the shield breaker. He doesn't have the same pressure that space animals have with pillaring and multishines, but no one wants to get grabbed by marth. Hitting something does change the timing of l-cancels by a bit, just practice hitting things and l-canceling until you get it right. Ken talks about how to deal with someone shielding your aerials, as well as other things, in this tutorial he did a while ago. very useful stuff. http://youtu.be/PFCQIAnYUMM I'm not sure where in the video he says it, but if someone shields your SH fair, l-cancel it and dash behind them for a grab. You'll know you're l-canceling right if the person you're hitting can't grab you after the fair.

I do not believe there is a way to transmit information about how long to delay apart from experiencing it yourself. Sometimes there might be occasional alternative methods to try which will yield better results due to some method. For example, using control stick to jump from shield into pressing B has a distinct advantage over say Y -> Up+B since you have to time three inputs with three separate fingers and that can lead to mistakes.

But, for the case of getting your L-cancel despite hitting light shield, nothing, shield, or an opponent I am unaware of any sort of mechanical method you can try to improve your success. I believe this is the case of literally practice makes perfect.

I can tell you that different situations might require you to fast fall and other times to not. For example, if you hit someone on a platform, its not always best to fast fall right away. Its preferable to wait and strike when they release shield or perhaps you can poke them by falling down a bit. But, you cannot get the right timing if you fast fall prematurely. Similarly, SH Double Fair cannot happen if you fast fall mid short hop. Likewise, since hitting an opponent cause hitlag and freezing you in the air your L-cancel timing must be delayed. I believe hitting a light shield gives the most hitlag to you. While shield and hitting a target have the same hitlag for you.

To make sure I cover both options sometimes (connecting and not connecting), I've developed the habit of hitting "Z" a moment before I hit "L". This means I'll get the L-cancel either way.

With that in mind, remember that even an L-cancelled Aerial against spacies and a dash behind can get you shined instead of getting them grabbed. When I first learned that technique, I thought it was awesome. But, considering 60% of my matches in Washington are against spacies, it's become significantly less helpful.

Just something to keep in mind. Spacing > Tech skill with Marth

If you want to practice l-canceling a shielded opponent you can simulate the experience quite easily. Just turn the damage ratio down to .5 and set your opponent to a handicap of 10 and yourself to 1. Now your aerials will cause a lag on hit, much like a shield, and you can practice this over and over. I did this for about 5 minutes a day for a few days and my l-canceling drastically improved. Sadly, I do not remember who posted the idea to give credit.

On a similar but different topic, if you want to practice all of your out of shield options out of shield stun, there is an easy way to do that as well. Simply go into training mode and throw down a red shell. Shield the hit and try to wavedash out of it. Then shield a hit and try to perform a fair, uair, reverse fair, etc out of it. Hell, you can even toss a red shell on a platform and practice shield dropping! I also don't remember where I read this tip either, but it has helped me a lot.
