Keyboard advice

I'm probably going to get some bad comments in this thread, just putting that out there ahead of time.

Can anyone give me some advice on using the keyboard to play SSB? I never played much 64 because I didn't own an N64 and I really got into smash when I got SSBM. Now that I have an N64 I've started to want to play it a lot. I found out about the online play and tried it out, but couldn't figure out how to do tilts or short hops. I tried tapping the keys quickly like I do on the controller, but that didn't work and I also tried lightly pressing the keys, but still got nothing. So if anyone could help me out that'd be really cool.

Some players are really good with the keyboard but its just plain difficult. I'd recommend getting a wired xbox 360 controller, it's pretty cheap and works just fine.

you can sh with keyboards, the time pressed it what matters (your keys do not measure the sensetivy of the press).
to do a dtilt you can just press d+a, otherwise you need to buffer the move, which means while doing another move, hold the direction you want to buffer to then you can tilt that way.
if you think it will be hard for you to adjust, you can also buy a n64 usb adapter to just plugin your n64 controller.

short hopping is just annoying to start with. You have to use the c-buttons, not the control stick button, because that has a fixed range. Set a c-button and lightly tap it.

The concept of buffering means holding a direction (control stick) as you are in the middle of another animation. This can be applied in a lot of ways. Crouching is also an animation, so if you're on a non-fall through platform you can do f-tilt and d-tilt from a stand (though u-tilt cannot be done as you can jump from a crouch).

Bad comments? A proper question deserves a proper answer. The rest is troll

I use this configuration, it works well for me because it emulates the position of the buttons on the actual 64 controller.

For utilts, walks and weak hits, you have to buffer it. It takes some time to get used to but its not extremely hard to do.

Short hops work exactly the same... tap a c button fast.

sideways?? I dont get it

left hand directions, right hand the other buttons, z button can be be pressed with both left or right hand, whats hard about it? You cant hold the KB you gotta play it like writing, thats really worse than actually holding a comfortable pad of course but what can we do...

Im going to have to agree with dandan on this one....that configuration looks really hard nix.

MTKO, I started playing this game with a friend on an emulator w/ a keyboard and I have never switched since. I find, with practice, you can do everything on a keyboard that you can do with a controller and as a bonus you have hax DI.

Here is the setup I learned as a complete nub that I would swear by today.

WSAD - movment keys - left hand.
Left Shift - Start button - left pinkey

C - Z Button - Right pointer finger
V - A Button - Right middle finger
B - B Button - Right index finger
N - C button (short hop) - Right pinkey finger
F - R Button - Right middle finger (when I want to grab I move this finger from the a button up)
G - L Button - Right index finger (when I want to taunt I move this finger up)

This way, all the buttons are mapped and the previously idle right pinkey finer now does the short hop.
Once you get used to tapping quickly with the pinkey, the rest of your right hand is free to do other things. This is the way its worked for me.

To short hop tap one of the c buttons lightly/quickly

You need to buffer most tilts/jabs (look @ above posts for good explanation of buffering)

To platform drop Uair, you need to press A and the up button at exactly the same time (you need to time this perfectly.)

^^this last technique is the hardest and the only kb player I know of that can do more than 10 in a row is star king...I can do about 3-4 haha

Hope this helps!!!! Keyboard is the best IMO

Thanks everyone for all the helpful answering. I've been practicing with the keyboard and getting slightly better. :D It's hard to get used to because it's such a different feel than the controller, but I can see why people like the keyboard so much.

And you say my config looks hard? :psycho: yours is pretty much the same except the hands are much close together so i would say its even harder.

Do not listen to any of these new***s. You listen to me, the best there is and ever will be.

You're input is something very basic for online play. I use keyboard online, You can too if you want, you set it up how ever you feel it feels best at first. You set it which ever way. Make sure you're C buttons are by you're analog buttons. So you can short hop. Make sure the buttons are right next to each other besides the analog and Dpad and C. Right side keyboard = Analog, C, Dpad, Left side keyboard = Buttons. Enter = Start.

You can tilt moves with keyboard by doing a move that makes you unable to do anything else, like say a up smash, you hold up while doing upsmash, Now press A again and you will uptilt. You can do it with many moves, Fast fall, Air, anything. You will figure it out. You're going to suck for you first couple of months then you will get better. Do what ever it takes to win. If there better then you, Camp and counter them the best you can. No matter how sucky you are you always have a chance to beat anyone.

i think i am used to that from playing mk2 back in the day with that default configuration ;)

Guys, guys.

Everyone knows that you have to WASD the movement so that you can set R and L to E and Q and save yourself the trouble of four-fingering ABZR. Personally, I use T for A, Y for B, and U for Z, but that's a matter of preference. I use J for my c-button as well, and that works pretty well for me because you rarely have to press Z and C at the same time or almost the same time (closest you get is maybe SH Zcancel).

Any other way of doing things is objectively foolish.

Mine's WASD for movement, My A button is J, B button is N. Shift is Z (i use that for l-canceling and whatnot), K is R (grabs). I dont really use anything else. It's good to look at what other people do, but ultimately you wanna find something thats the most comfortable for you. I tried plenty of different settings before i found the one i was most comfortable with.

you should set a key for a c button, you want to be able to short hop.

Did most of you keyboard players start on keyboard playing smash? Or did you play it on Nintendo 64 first, and then when you started playing online, you don't took the time to buy and adapter and then just learned keyboard. Cuz if that's the case I cant understand why you like keyboards better. Its like playing a different game. At least if you had used 64 controls for years as I assumed you did.

It seems there are both cases. In my case, I played console way before.
Keyboard is 100 times better than a 64 controller with a f***ed up joystick, like I used to have. Thank god I have a better one now.

Yeah, i get it if you start with keyboard, because then its the only thing you have to refer too. And ofc nothing is worse than a destroyed joystick. But buy a new one on eBay with a good joystick. And if you had played smash on console since 1999, and have the good controller, I cant understand why persons prefer keyboards. But maybe its just me.

I too started with keyboard online and then felt controller could unlock full potential so i bought one. Then i failed miserably at it for the first 2 weeks (Couldn't beat level 9's lol) before being decent enough.

Yeah if you start with keyboard I get it. But if you have used the controller for years, and used that flexible moving control, and switches to keyboard, it must be so unnatural way of playing. At least i felt it that way. But maybe if you practice, practice, practice, in the end it will be natural.

If I had a n64 controller connected to the computer I'd do just as well as I do on keyboard for most things...

Any other controller and I fall to pieces >_>

When I played with a keyboard I used 5456 on the num pad for movement, numlock, 7, * and 9 for c buttons (for easy reach and really easy djc), o = L, p = R, l = Z, two buttons to the right of l = A and B (swedish keyboard, no clue what they are for you =P)

i have:
W A S D for movement (cause im used from first person shooters)
F = A
G = B
H = Z
R = R
T = C
Y (German Z) = R

and in NRage Plugin have mapped V for 30% analogstick up + A for drop uair and utilt. and i think its not cheat doing this, as it is rather a balance for that handicap with analogstick-on-keyboard problem

Definitely cheating.

You get Hax DI, you lose some ease-of-tilt. Them's the rules, son.
