Just got Melee from a friend! What should I know?

I just recently got into competitive Smash with Smash 4, but I want to move on to bigger things and I picked up a copy of Melee. The problem is, I know jack about it. What do I *need* to know before I can start attending tournaments?

You need to know that you're probably going to get owned at every tournament you attend for about 2 years because people have been practicing it for a long time (It's been around for 10+ years).
Watch the documentary on youtube and it's got some tips and info to get you started.
Then play around with some characters, find the S Tier character you enjoy playing, and start practicing and studying.

Just look up Wak's Advanced How to play video. It's got all the basic tech you need to learn once you start playing. After that, you can work on character specific tech. Also make sure to get a CRT tv. And light press your L cancels.

There are a lot of new players too. Not everyone is a veteran. You'll find someone near your skill. However, seeding will likely pit you against the better players. It won't take you 2+ years to stop getting owned

Oh yeah, don't worry! I know i'm not gonna kick any butt for awhile, but i'll be sure to put up a fight.

The good thing is CRTs are cheap; if not free from friends "upgrading" to an HDTV :p
