Jumping instead of WD

I would say I'm a pretty experienced player. I've been playing competitively for about 7 months and I'm a heavy WD user. About every 5 to 10 WD's I jump instead of WD. I assume this is because I hit L during jumpsquat and cause it not to come out. This is a big problem for me as an Ike main as I try to WD->quickdraw and end up doing a jump to quickdraw, putting me in a very bad position. I've played a lot of people and I haven't really noticed this problem with anyone else. Why does it seem like it's just me?

Happens to me too. I'm sure it's a fairly common problem.

It's not a jump "instead of" a WD. Jumping is the first half of WDing; you just need to work on your timing to complete the second half. You're probably pressing it too soon.

Yeah, I'm aware of how it happens, it's just interesting that I don't see many other people have this problem.

I do it. Bothers me.

But I don't find much use for Wavedashing with Lucas. I find myself on the offensive most of the time.

I guess maybe it's just something you have to get used to.

It's a practice thing and takes time to really get down. For example, I'm at the point where 8/10 of my WDs with Ike are perfect WDs (which you can easily tell because his jump voice doesn't come out). You just need to spend a minimum amount of time each day (ie. 15-30 minutes or so) getting a feel for his jumpstart and the more you put it to play in matches (even just arbitrarily throwing it out for practice) the more naturally it will come to you.

But I don't find much use for Wavedashing with Lucas. His WD length isn't special or anything
Uhh, what.
I'm pretty sure Lucas has either the 5th or 6th longest wavedash in the game. The kid's got very little traction.

That was a typo, sorry. I was meaning to say that even though it is long I don't find myself using it all that often.

Remember that jumpsquat animation varies throughout the cast. If you learn to wd with someone like Lucas or Fox, wd'ing with Ike could result in jumps as you are used to a fast timing. Jumping and air dodging would seem to indicate the reverse, going from a slow character like Ganon to someone like Lucario.

do you jump with a trigger button ? That could explain it.
Nah, I use Y and L.

Yeah I know the timing, he's got a 5 frame jump squat, and I main Ike exclusively.

It's common dude, as a Luigi main I used to have this problem a lot. Practice makes perfect bro, just input the aerial dodge a tad later.

Practice often. To really get good at this game you should be practicing every day. Even if it's only a little bit each day, it makes a big difference. Movement is typically the focus of said practice for me. That and perfect shielding (I make a tag where every button is special so that I can mash buttons with my wrist on a second controller while I attempt to perfect shield reflect).

That said, you should b reverse your quick draw more often than doing wavedash -> quick draw. Wavedash -> quick draw gives your opponents earlier ques to help them predict you as it has start up (jump squat + 1 frame of air time) and end lag (air dodge landing lag, which is 10 frames). Since you have a ton of options out of wavedash, it's still pretty good, so I'm not saying don't do it at all. Just that b reversing quick draw is often the better choice for quick drawing towards the opponent (say right) while you are running or dashing away (running/dashing left).

To do this, hit side b in the direction you are dashing/running (in this example left), then immediately flick your joystick in the opposite direction to turn it around (so flick the stick right in this example).

I am right here with you Y-L. I find that it happens more for me if I try to WD from one direction to the opposite. Like if I were to WD right then WD left most of the time I just jump. It sucks.
