You know that thing Hax started doing against Marth's where he jumps back from the ledge then re-grabs it to avoid Marth's Up-B. How effective is it actually and should we all jump on this train? also what other characters can use it against marth?

Actually, it's "old-school" technology if I recall commentary correctly. I remember thinking that if Marth didn't ride the stage on his Up-B, he might be able to hit the jump back. Just a thought.
Edit: There's also the Marth-Killer, where you light shield on the edge.

Couldn't you do this instead?
Doing this, you're always invincible.
I am aware how good the jump back is.
I've gathered that if you jump back a bit before Marth uses Up-B, you're safe, so I guess you can anticipate when he's going to use it.

yeah, I'm working on switching over to either that or haxdashing for keeping control of the ledge. both are admittedly better options

the jump back is just very very easy

Actually, I find that I have to practise this

because it requires continuous movement, and the ledge drop and fast fall have to be timed perfectly. If I stop moving for a split second, and try to do the ledge hop, I can get caught by jabs.

I don't think I answered this question(s) properly. It's most effective when you know that they have to go for the ledge (and can't land on stage) because you know when they are forced to Up-B, so you can time the backwards jump (if you prefer this to complete invincibility).
I guess most characters can do it. The character that comes to mind is Jigglypuff, because of the horizontal air movement. I think that Ganon will struggle to use this because his ledge hop is very short (so short he has a perfect waveland or something). Yoshi, Peach, and Ness can't do this (obviously because of their double jumps). I guess it all comes down to timing it correctly. As Prof. Oak said, there's a time and place for everything
