As far as I can tell you, Melee is not online. There might be some cruddy mods that let you play online or whatever, like people made for Morrowind, but those never go well and wouldn't be worth the time wasted. But I have no idea how people would get a gamecube online in the first place so i'd have to say know.

You also could've heard that super smash bros. was online, but mistook it for melee, because there is an online version of the original SSB.

yeah, you can go online, using unofficial software...aka hacks. IIRC, its called warppipe, or something to that effect...google it.
