So I searched for a thread like this using keywords like "item play" and "item", but I didn't find anything. Maybe some of you have posted this idea in other threads, but I had an idea to make items not random and perhaps more tournament friendly. The idea would be that you can turn a feature on or off that allows characters to be able to pull out a specific item during a match, perhaps with a taunt button(or a new button?).
Speaking of which, let's use Ganondorf as an example. You're playing a match with Ganon, and you do his down taunt. If you press it again during the taunt animation, he pulls out his sword, and I'm assuming that wielding the sword would be like wielding a bat item. After he pulls out the sword, you can't take it out again for the remainder of the match.
If you apply the once-per-match rule, other examples would be Donkey Kong being able to pull out a barrel, or Mario pulling out a Fire Flower, etc.
Or perhaps you can pick and choose which items you would draw. Casuals would likely choose items like Stars, Hammers, Pokeballs, Assist Trophy's, Smash Balls, etc. But IF the competitive community had any interest in this idea, they could ban/limit certain items, if not all of them. It would be interesting if characters had items
The reason why I like this idea is because it cuts the randomness of Smash's existing item play and adds an element to the game where players can make a decision of when they want to gain an item advantage. Though I imagine that a match would never go by where there was a downside to taking out an item, unless the item is dropped and used against you.
Any feedback is welcome.
