I know that you're supposed to be able to switch from Samus to Zamus by spamming up and down on the controller but I can never do it except for those one or two times.. Is there some trick to doing it? I see really good Samus players do it all the time whenever they want..

Go here. When I found this thread, I was able to transform into Zero Suit Samus. Prior to that, I didn't even bother, because I found it difficult. This thread will show you an easier way.

you can hold the shield button while selecting samus. if you hold untill the stage selection screen you'll be Zamus at the start of the match.

I rest the right side of my controller on my leg (still holding the left controller handle with my left hand), position my right thumb on the D-pad so that the tip is on down, and then keep pushing up and down as fast as possible. You don't have to be too careful doing it, as you can transform in the middle of a taunt, including your side taunt, so you can't really mess it up.

Here's how I do it (with the Wiimote and Nunchuck).

Grab a napkin, paper towel or something, even your shirt will do. The point is to have something more slippery than a finger, but even your finger works fine. Put your left index finger inside it, and slide your finger from 1 to 2 extremely rapidly, like a vibration. Samus should transform quickly. Of all the methods I tried, this was the most reliable. I would just wait until your opponent is off the stage to do so though (or at least far away).

The one index finger is the best because it requires the least amount of effort. Just practice it and it will become easy. The D-pad is bad, so just do a rocking motion, don't try to slide it or you will be too slow.

I put the controller on my right leg, and hold it with my left hand. With my right hand I put my index finger on the down of the dpad and my middle finger on the up of the dpad. Then I just move them up and down quickly. It always works well for me.
