Is there like an age requirement to enter tournaments?

I have always been wondering that, since im 13 and want to enter tournaments. The only thing im fearing is that it is going to look really strange if there is a kid in a bunch of random adults :/

Started going to tournaments when I was 12. The thing is, if you're supportive of the scene, pretty good, or friendly, you should be fine. Don't be annoying, quite vague, but that's all I could really say. If you don't mind some people swearing, go ahead!

Well, you just do generic "good boy" stuff, like helping around the house, helping your brother, anything that benefits changing a person's mind to drive you to a tournament.

It's funny, I came to this section for a similar reason. However...

I'm 32. I look like I'm in my 30's.

I remember feeling old when I was 26 going to Brawl tournaments and almost everyone there was still in their teens.

Is it even socially appropriate for someone my age to attended tournaments now? You ever been to a Yu-Gi-Oh or Pokemon trading card game event and seen that one really old bald guy actually playing and thought, "What the hell is -that- doing here?" Yeah, I really don't want to be that guy... -_-

Depends on where you live and the scene but a lot of smashers are 20-30 years old so being slightly older is not an issue. For example where I live its a large college town so most smashers are 19-24 but in California, where the heart of the scene is, has a large amount of older players.

That's true. I suppose the heart and soul of the tournament scene is going to be players that started with Melee, so most of them will be in their early to mid 20's by now. As silly as this sounds, I didn't consider that most other smashers have grown up with the game too. Thanks. :)

We have a few smashers in the MN scene who are in their young teens, including a 13-year-old. Our resident 13-year-old is accepted despite often questionable behavior, but it's whatever. He's improving rapidly and exists, so why not play with him here and there? He attends tournaments frequently -- the biggest issue with him is probably just transportation, which I recomend you guarantee first and foremost (means to and from events/fests). We've had other young smashers who were very beneficial to the scene. One of our PR members is a 15 year old.

How you convince your family to bring you to tournaments depends on your particular family. When I was 13, I attended yugioh tournaments regularly, and my family's approach was, "sure, I'll take you there. Have fun, call when you need a ride." Just talk to your family about an interest in going to these tournaments or casual meetups and ask them how it could be done -- there's probably a good chance they'll view this as a good sign or opportunity for you to mature into a more independent person.

We have a smasher in MN who is like 50. We all love him. He does nothing but play ICs and wobble us, but he's fun to be around. Even better, he would often host at his house.

Age doesn't matter much. It's personality and your interest in smash that matter.

I'll ask my parents then.
I would like to play against him, but I'm in CA.

If my parents say yes, what are some tournaments in la, that isnt at a college?

I wouldn't know -- I'm from Minnesota.

With that said, there are so many tournaments in L.A. that you shouldn't have any trouble finding tournaments at gaming centers. One, for example, would be Super Smash Sundays at Super Arcade in Walnut.

I can't tell you much, but...
This guy can

There is no age limit for smash. Hell, I had some pretty young children (6-8 yr old) at Smashachusetts I, II, & III with their parents rocking a store issued wii remote.. Of course they were there for the fun of it. Maturity and realistic expectations are the key to success when starting out in the competitive smash scene. Knowing what "gossip" or "clicks" to steer clear from can also help too. It's okay to make friends though, definitely, but always be conscientious of your goals and aspire to maintain humility while increasing you skills. Self-respect and respect for others are key also.
