I want to get in to Melee. I love the game as it is and respect it every time I watch it, despite being more towards Smash 4. However, one of the things I can absolutely not get used to is Tap Jump ever since Brawl and future games had the option of custom movesets. I play Doctor Mario and Up Tilt is a good juggling move but I can never pull it off unless I hold the stick up while in a animation with the exception of running/walking and that isn't always going to work if I want to make full use of the move. The 20XX pack has the option to turn it off, and since I've played Project M it feels just fine without it on, but that wouldn't be a good option if I want to go to tournaments for the game, which I do.

So, is there anyway to get used to tap jump comfortably?

I just practiced jumping with X until I got comfortable with that, then I made sure I could do utilts and things like that after. Just take it one step at a time.

I think you should turn off tap jump in any game you have the option to. Turning it on is a generally lazy thing to do, and most people don't realize the consequences. You should train yourself to have absolute finesse over your controller, and playing with tap jump makes it impossible to do that. The problem is not permanent, you just need to do a bit of practicing to get used to it.

Playing with tap jump definitely does not make it impossible to do that. Look at all of the top Melee players. They all have to play with tap jump on and they are able to pull off all of these ridiculous things. It just takes time and practice.

For the problem with up tilting with Doc and jumping on accident, don't slam the stick up when you go for an up tilt and you should be able to avoid jumping on accident. It'll just be something you have to get used to over time.

Leave tap jump on in other games to get used to it.
Tap jump lets you easily usmash OoS and is very useful for up-b Oos and a number of other things.

The reason anyone even has trouble with tap jump is that you are allowed to hold the control stick the entire way in a direction to do tilts.

Learning to tilt by pressing the joystick only part of the way resolves tap jump problems pretty much immediately.

Yeah I completely agree. To not be awful at 64 or Melee, just leave it turned on. I used to play with it off since I started with Brawl, but I learned very quickly that it's best to just practice doing utilts on command inside of training to learn how to eventually deal with it.

I actually keep tap jump off in every other game. I guess that after a while I was able to better differentiate the different games and adjust my playstyle to match it. Leaving it on won't necessarily make you better, but it will help for sure.

Guys I screwed up. I meant to say that playing with tap jump OFF makes it impossible to have the finesse necessary to compete at the top level. On mobile right now so I'll edit the OP later.

Good posts guys. Thanks. I have trouble tilting it in the heat of battle when I am getting pressured, but if I wait patiently I guess I could do it 80% of the time. I guess I'll just have to keep practicing.

Literally have no problems utilting and no mis inputs after today. Guess all I needed was practice.

Despite the fact I can have very good execution with Utilt in general I will occasionally make a mistake. Its that level of mistake I feel will always exist and the best you can do is reduce your frequency of errors. You might not have any misses today or tomorrow. Someday you probably will mess up and more in the future. Practice will help to improve your consistency, but never make it perfect. The only way to make it perfect is to remove tap jump.

Tap jump is baller. I do so much stuff with tap jump.
Being able to use tap jump for things like usmash OoS is godlike (I use it or buffer jump with cstick for most OoS things)
tap jump lets you upB OoS too, which is pretty dope for a lot of characters.
When I play spacies, I use tap jump for shine->grab and shine->aerial. With falco I use it for ledgehop double lasers.
With ICs I use tap jump for everything nana does.
It's so good.
You just need to get used to it. Then embrace it for how godlike it is. Just understand the things it's not good for. Comfort and control are the most important things.
