Smash Wii U Is the Gamepad important in SSB?

So recently I discovered ( And I say I discovered because I don't know what happened) that my Gamepad's touch sensor was a little to weak. It would only respond If I rub it with a piece of cloth or cotton. And It wouldn't last long before the touch sensor goes unresponsive again. And y'all know that Gamepads ain't available. There are ones on Ebay but A) They are probably fake and B) They still cost too much.

So cutting to the chase here. Do I really NEED the Gamepad for Smash? I'm only gonna be using my GC controller and maybe the Wii U Pro Controller to fight. Connecting to the Internet is something I can handle even though my crappy touch sensor is gonna make it a 15 minute task.

I'm considering buying a new Wii U anyways. So Is the GamePad important for Smash?

I don't think that there's anything you'll need the touch screen for other than creating custom stages. Other than that, all menus should be able to be navigated with any and all other controllers.

You should have no problems. But if you were looking forward to custom stages, you might be out of luck there.

Anyways, I am curious, did you drop your gamepad at one point, or did it just stop working? Because I just got a wii u, and I want to know if the gamepad is not going to just die on me for no reason.

I don't really blame Nintendo. I think dust made its way into the screen because I haven't used it in a long time. You should have no problems. But If you wanna be extra careful then buy a screen protector or a case.

Anyways I guess I'm buying a new Wii U.

In fact, you CAN'T even navigate through the menu by using touch controls. André from GameXplain stated that in the most recent Q&A...

Stage Builder and Paint are the only features that use the gamepad. Paint is cool but unnecessary and the stage builder is actually pretty limited, so I would say that you aren't missing out on anything.

It's just that I was thinking of buying a new TV and this came up.

My old TV isn't very good. Fingers crossed Gamepad will fix itself so I could get myself a new TV...

Paint is pretty cool if you wanna share on Miiverse. Stage Builder doesn't seem pretty limited to me; free-drawing your stage is awesome and I look forward to this.
