If I remember correct at the end of the direct, Sakurai said how he "hopes to see these characters in many games to come"
It could just be a general statement about these characters being in their own respective games, but I think he was implying that there will be more Smash Bros in the future.

Not a chance, Smash is too good of a series for Nintendo for them to just end it. However, it may very well be Sakurai's last game.

Also, there are many more characters that could be added to smash other than Ridley. They are far from out of characters.

My prediction: "Smash 5" will be Smash 4 Turbo. A remaster on the NX with everything in both the 3DS and Wii U versions, the DLC included (except perhaps keep Bayonetta downloadable to hold off a T rating), a few new characters (Ice Climbers and Inklings at least), and possibly other extras like new modes. Smash 4 has almost 60 characters now and the game hasn't even been out that long. Making a new game that surpasses it in content would be an an absolutely massive undertaking. Nintendo is going to want a Smash game on their new platform without waiting years into its cycle, and I seriously doubt that one of their studios is already working on it. Plus, Smash 4 could sell a lot more on a successful console. So an upgraded version makes a lot of sense.

In fact, given the rumors regarding the NX concept of a unified platform where the handheld and console can play the same games, this would be a natural next step from the two versions of Smash 4 and it wouldn't surprise me if this has been the plan all along (it could also fit with the vanilla naming of the games).

Sakurai also said in an interview recently "we don't know if there will be another Smash game."

I imagine if there ever is a totally new Smash game, it might be a sort of reboot with the game's core mechanics seriously shaken up and a smaller cast of characters rebuilt from scratch.

Potentially Sakurai's last game, but 9/10 he may just jump right back into another one. Though Iwata was the driving force every time it happened, so it may take a while even when the new console is out.

Sakurai has done a great job overall on the series, even if he has made some questionable choices. With that said, he deserves a long break, and it would be interesting to see a Smash game made by a different director. There's no way this is the last Smash game. Smash is pretty much one of Nintendo's biggest money machines right now, along with Mario and Pokémon.

Locking since most of the comments are the same.

It is highly likely that there will be another smash game. Maybe not directed by Sakurai, maybe not in the next 10 years. Plenty of third parties want their character in smash and there are plenty of mii fighter outfits and assist trophies from nintendo franchises that could be turned into playable fighters as well.
