I've been thinking about it. A lot of features from Project M are popping up in Smash 4. Not everything, of course. The air dodge is still Brawl's air dodge, for example. But a lot of things like alternate costumes, less randomization (like how Peach's Forward-A cycled between three instruments consistently, Olimar's Pikmin are now plucked in a set order), removal of tripping, sped-up gameplay, more competitive friendly compared to Brawl, etc.
While not a copy of Project M by any means, a lot of things from Project M are now 'officially' debuting in Smash 4. I have to wonder, did Sakurai ever see Project M or learn of its' existence? I wouldn't be surprised if he at least knew about it, since Smash 4 is doing a lot more to appeal to the competitive scene.

I'd say "yes".

DK's new dash attack, Charizard's new foward aerial, Samus's Up Smash having reasonable knockback, more than one character being able to hold the ledge under certain circumstances, the WFT's Deep Breathing is very similar to Lucas's Offense Up in Project M, Pit's gliding no longer being performed by jumping and holding the jump button (though it was straight-up removed from his arsenal in Smash 4, whereas in PM it is just performed differently), Pit's arrows having greater control, characters being split and having their own character slots (especially in regard to the Samus duo), etc.

There are so many shared ideas that it can't be a coincidence IMO :p

I'm not certain of where they showcased the airdodge in Smash 4, so you'll have to direct me to that.

Alternate costumes were also in Brawl for Wario

I'm not sure that his intent was to make it less "random", but rather to correct a weak point in strategy for Olimar and Peach.

I'm sure they did see it; it's one of the most popular Wii mods out there.

I'm not sure that it is taking "inspiration" from Project M, that would entail going back to the fast-paced action of Melee, but it is correcting a lot of gameplay flaws that were apparent in Brawl.

Probably not, but some thing sin project M are there just as "things that were canon that they could fit in without wrecking the balance" like how Tlink can move when spin attacking on the ground. so you might see similarities thanks to that. like Dk's new roll dash attack (should've been there from smash 64 though)

I'm pretty sure that I saw somewhere that Smash 4 used Brawl's air dodge. I can't remember where, though.

Alternate costumes were in Brawl, but only to a very small extent. In Brawl, Wario was the only character to have alternate costumes. Project M gave a lot of characters (Peach, Luigi, Bowser, Toon Link, Ness, etc.) more alternate costumes. Smash 4 also appears to be using more alternate costumes as well.

While that's definitely correcting a weak point in strategy for them, it is also reducing randomization at the same time, whether that's intentional on his part or not.

Also, on a separate note, how do you quote like that? I don't really know how you do that, and I'd appreciate you telling me how.

I copy and paste the entire quote, and then delete everything that you wrote except the parts I am directly refering to.

No, the creators of Project M are time travelers, and have gone into the future to play Smash 4, then they came back and made the famous Project M. :troll:

Nah, in all seriousness, I think both Project M and Smash 4 had the same inspiration.

Melee.

I forgot whether or not Sakurai can actually speak English.

Is there a Japanese translation of Project M?
I thought he could speak English.
Then again, in the Smash Direct, they had to use a translator. I honestly don't know if there's a Japanese translation of Project M. I do know that Project M can work with Japanese copies of Brawl, though.

Project M and SSB4 have the same goal - to improve on it's predecessor, Brawl. It comes as no surprise that they share certain aspects. Sakurai is not playing PM for inspiration.

I believe he does know English, yes.

He just has translators because he isn't fluent in English and probably doesn't know it as well, so it is overall safer to have a translator.

I always wondered whether Charles Barkley knew about Charles Barkley: Shut Up and Jam Gaiden or not.

Anyway, he knows. He would have to be living in a cave and not directing the next Smash Bros to not know about PM. This is the information age. What he makes of it is a complete toss up.

Sakurai is confusing me with his anti-competitive mindset mixed with Smash 4's apparent warming up to the idea of competition. The direct honestly made me really uncomfortable because it was full of weird contradictions. For Glory not getting a ranking system. 1st Player Mode getting one but being loser friendly. The assumption that Final Destination is the end all be all competitive stage... Yet, tripping is removed and things are a little faster with less randomness. Inviting pros to the E3 Tourney, etc. It's like Sakurai is at a split in the road and wants to walk both directions simultaneously.

This thread's been done a bit already, and nothing new comes out of it.

We know the answer is, NO. You can speculate all you want, but you know what the answer really is.
