Yes theres probably been a bajilion threads regarding Zero Suit Samus but I'm here to talk about something thats kinda related to that ish.

Do you think Smash 4 is more sexual than other Nintendo games? I mean, you have Shulk fighting in his undies, Zero Suit Samus's everything and Sakurai displaying that he really REALLLLY wants to bone Palutena all of a sudden. There have been sexual references to things in Nintendo games before (The hidden nude woman in Kirby's Dream Land 2 comes to mind) but I don't think they've ever been as blatant about it as they have in Smash 4. What do you think?

with games like Fire Emblem Awakening and Hyrule Warriors what if Nintendo is becoming one of THOSE companies...

Bandai Namco helped with development. That explains a lot. lol

Anyway, yes, this game has more fanservice (of the sexual kind) than Nintendo's usual standards.

They blocked off the panty shots so at least we won't have to deal with that anymore.

But yeah I didn't really mind at first but the stripper pole Palutena thing was a bit much, lol.

Meh, for Nintendo's standards, possibly. But in general it's far from it. The only real "sexuality" is in the form of some revealing outfit. But nothing far too risque.

I mean the reward for beating metroid games under a certain, time limit has always been seeing samus strip down to her suit..and I think there's plenty of other examples as well of Nintendo throwing out some fan service now and then. (bike costumes in mario kart for the gals) So no I think it's about the same, and I don't think there's anything wrong with that it's all in good taste.

THOUGH that being said I really dislike palutena's pole dancing taunt.

It is more prevalent than previous smash games (and most Nintendo games), but I wouldn't call it anything that you would have to hide from kids. It still at a level where it is safe for families to play, but provides some eye candy for more mature players.

Though I will admit, Palutena's taunt might raise a few eyebrows from parents who got the game for their kids...

Most of it is from other Nintendo games in the first place; it only seems more prevalent here because it's all in one game now.

Melee and Brawl were worse for the voyeuristic pause camera which has been addressed in this one. I figured it would be ever since that Brawl-era post,
Sakurai said:
To this point, I’ve received a great number of screenshots that focus on peeking at the undergarments of certain Brawl combatants. So let me just say it again—shots like these will never be posted to the Dojo or sent out to users via the Smash Service.

Considering Nintendo stepped forward to publish Bayonetta 2, I'm assuming they're not shying away from sexuality anymore.

However, I wouldn't consider Smash 4 more "sexual" than other Nintendo games like Kid Icarus: Uprising or Fire Emblem: Awakening.

Certainly Uprising was way more harmlessly salacious than Sm4sh.

Yeah, the Palutena poledancing taunt is a little more than we were all expecting, despite the way she... uh... just look up "Palutena woop woop" on youtube if you want to know what I'm trying to reference. Aside from that, I don't think it's too much of a problem. And as someone said earlier, Nintendo isn't really shying away from sexuality anymore as evidenced by stepping up to publish Bayonetta 2. That said, I wouldn't say it's really good or bad. It's just happening. That being said, Famitsu's Super Smash Swimsuit Season issue should be coming out soon.

Okay that's just lewd, lol. She's a fictional character based on a fictional idea (Classical Greek gods and goddesses,) and has impossible natural green hair. The pole dancing taunt is just a nice chuckle, nothing more.

I beat Dream Land 2 and never noticed the nude woman, that was an interesting touch.

I hope, as a female you aren't offended because I agree with you that Nintendo has been going for more sexualised depictions, partly just by hiring companies like Team Ninja. Only a fool would deny it now.

For people saying they blocked off the panty shots. That would just look weird on Wii U, I dunno, let's be honest. We'll see if they do it on Wii U too, but either way it's a tad late :p

The game isn't sexual at all.

If you gain some sort of sexual gratification from the portrayal of the characters, that's just on you as an individual.

Think of it as like finding chest barring women in natural geographic magazine sexually appealing, its not intended to be sexualized but one may find it arousing.

Anyway, I'm not turned on by animated characters, but come on. Palutena's taunt is playfully sexual, nothing more, but it's there. I don't see a big deal, but pretending Bandai Namco and Team Ninja haven't sexualized Nintendo franchises (and Intelligent Systems doing it themselves with Fire Emblem: Awakening's Tharja..)..I dunno what to say. It's fine that people are noting this and there's no sense being offended and grasping at straws.

I don't have a problem with this stuff, I'm a dude. But come on.... Pretending something isn't there doesn't make it not exist, and admitting something is there doesn't mean you think there's a problem.

Palutena's trailer isn't technically apart of the game... unless it's in the wii u version as a bonus.
But I don't gain sexual gratification from it either, I find it odd, not sexual, but that's just me.

The pole dance seems innocent enough, it's just sort of a twirl... not really suggestive, I guess it does something for some people, but not myself, and my friends agree.

I guess it just depends on your own standards of sexualization and your own personal arousal triggers.
Like the sexual references in Family Guy or the Simpsons, it's more satiyer and humor for me then sexual.

Something does not have to turn you on to be considered sexual by others, and that's kind of too much information territory anyway. I'm not "interested" in animated characters either, but that doesn't have anything to do with this. Some people on this very forum clearly are "into" animated characters. Different perspectives.

My line is that I live in a liberal western country and I'm no prude, but some people are more sensitive and I can't deny Nintendo changing their own standards and behaviour slightly, changes I'm fine with but some aren't.

Not suggestive enough to change the rating yeah, but it's suggestive of something. This is one of the arguments where it's really hard to disagree with the OP's premise.

I don't see the pole twirl to be sexual at all.
It's comparable to gymnastics or cheer leading or yoga for that matter.
If she bent down low and picked up slow, than maybe i'd agree it's sexualized.

Something else to consider is that a lot of the stuff we're seeing in the full Japanese version could easily be censored/removed in the Western release. Dozens of games have had slightly altered or censored content to compensate for the cultural differences and give the game a certain rating. Example: covering up that one deity's cleavage in FF4. So it might be a little toned down in the West so people don't lose their heads.

There would be riots for a game like this. It's minor and can easily fit in the E10+ rating. Also Europe doesn't care about this stuff nearly as much as the US does. I wouldn't worry. FFIV was nearly 25 years ago.

That's true, the pinheads who laid their lives down to try and censor games in the 90's are either gone or not vocal. TBH I don't think anyone playing as ZSS will play the alts other than the Zero Mission ones. Or maybe that's just me.

If they dare remove Zero Suit Samus' glorious Zero Mission booty shorts I WILL set fire to Nintendo of America's headquarters.

Well it has Rosalina in it so it automatically is for me. Also this:

Friendly reminder that Sakurai went out of his way to give us a close up of a passed out Rosalina with a pretty lewd looking face. There is a certain term I could apply to her lips here but it's outside of this sites boundaries.

I don't think this stuff is harmful though, I don't get why people make a fuss about it (well, a negative fuss at least...the picture above fussed me alright, but in a good way). Nintendo have some beautiful women. Let them show it off, within moderation. Most of it is pretty much up to interpretation anyway. Personally, I'm baffled by people singling out ZSS's alt costume as sexual, as it is not inherently so (she just owns the look - like how Rosalina owns the biker look in MK8). And while Shulk's alt costume would be hot or sexually arousing to some people, I honestly took it as more of an inside joke for Xenoblade fans, especially because of how it was shown off in the trailer.

I mean why would you complain about fanservice in a game that's all about fanservice, of all kinds?:

Just so happens that some of it is more sexually suggestive in it's nature:

And that's OK.

Also, a note about Peach's undergarments not being in the 3DS version - that's likely only the 3DS version that's effected. Her Amiibo has those full legs and undergarments. It's likely in the Wii U version too, in that case. Don't know why it's not in the 3DS version, maybe they found animating her full legs around the dress in the 3DS version more difficult due to the lower poly model. Rosalina's cosmic underside is in both versions though, and you can briefly see "the cosmos beneath her gown" in the CGI portion of her trailer, as it's thematic and is an....interesting display of the power she has a cosmic goddess. While I would have had NOOOOO objection to truly seeing the... "cosmos" beneath her gown, I actually really like what they did with her. It's kinda hot in it's own way, it's a cute tease for the curious, and shows just how amazing and absurd her abilities can get, something that's very hard to convince people of because they don't pay enough attention to her in Galaxy.

As for Palutena's pole dance - pole dancing is not inherently a sexual thing, as it is a genuine gymnastic exercise. However, it's blatantly a sexual tease with Palutena. We haven't seen her display gymnastic prowess at all in any other game (and this is the only instance of it even in Smash 4), she's wearing clothing that very nearly reveals her bare buttocks when she does the pole dance, she has a flirty and sultry little giggle when she does it, and Palutena is known to be conscious of her good body, and is insulted when Phospora claims she's "an old granny" in Uprising, and they get into a verbal cat fight over it. Not to mention all of the fanservice she gets when SHAFT animates her.

Nothing ever exceeds the source material for a given element, I think. Other M Samus has been (slightly) toned down, and Palutena's taunt is definitely in-character for her.

I don't know if I think this thread is dumb or interesting x).
I must say, some female characters are more appealing than they were in Brawl, ( here you go Zelda).
I found Zelda to be gorgeous, and Palutena is the same to me. I also like Zero Suit Samus and Rosalina...
Can we say they are more sexualised, I don't what to say, but playing as cute girls is always nice I think ^^
Zero Suit Samus was already sexual to me in Brawl, and the Stripper Pole taunt of Palutena looks to me to be in character with her, her giggle seems to be a playful one.
Anyway...We don't see any panties shot so it's not that sexualised to me.

If you're going to a club where the strippers dance like how Palutena does on her staff, you're going to a really lame stripclub.
