I main Project M. The only things that I come back for in Melee are Pichu, Termina bay and Brinstar depths.

Yeah I main P:M. I would play 64 but whatever. P:M has the potential to be the best Smash game, period. So I'm playing it based off of that potential.

Although I will say it has far surpassed Melee in quality.

Yeah, I guess you could say I main Project: Melee, although I do still play Melee on my GCN quite often. Love the Wi-Fi that is soon to be gone on Project: M though...

I all seriousness, character versatility is probably the most appealing part of PM. I find that a lot of different archetypes in Fighting Games are viable in PM, while Melee only has two of three types of viable character playstyles. It's hard to play an offensive orientated aerial fighter in Melee because Jigs or Peach don't fight in the air like that, compared to say Meta Knight.

Now to be totally honest, if I loved playing Marth/Fox as much as I do Ike or Meta Knight then I'd likely play Melee as much as PM. But as it stands, Project M has more playstyles I'm in love with.

As a melee predominant player myself i admire that so many new playstyles became viable in pm that werent in melee. And i agree with what you said about melee players enjoying melee more because of fharacters like marth and fox.

Honestly while there are so many new choices playstyle wise for players, very very few of them embody the same aggressive and heavy punish characters that dominated the melee scene. Its much easier for a peach or a mid tier than a spacy marth or falcon to find more characters they like in pm since theyre all generally slower, zonier, and floatier than the melee characters.

Ive experimented with most of the characters in pm and i think link and
mewtwo are really interesting and fun characters, but they dont appeal to me as much since ive always prefered more aggressive mobile combo heavy characters. Link is fun but his punish game doesnt extend much further than a boomerand and a couple of sword swipes. Donkey kong is kinda slow and toon link who has really fun combos has to space his projectiles a lot just to land that punish since he doesnt have the most optimal offensive options. And while roy is cool hes not something id imagine most marth mains would practice as heavily since he doesnt have the quick gimps or grab game or mobility of marth that his playerbase likes. Thats probably the biggest reason melee players havent dabbled in pm outside of tournies where its held as a side event.

Dude wheres the poll?

(This thread is actually very interesting and i think it would benefit having a poll. Also Melee/PM mainly)

I will wait to play PM seriously until it's been completely stable for at least a year and has a more established meta. Until then, Melee gets all my attention but I will play PM if it's around for fun.

I main P:M, I love melee, but P:M has too many added treats that melee doesn't to not main it; custom controls, more stages, more characters, more balance, custom music, more costumes, more kinds of techs.

dafuq is BrawlEx? The clone engine?

more balance
Do we really know that yet? PM is still relatively new and has no official tier list yet.

"But Melee isn't balanced at all!" True. But the beauty of Melee is that while we have certain characters that are objectively better than others (spacies), they are so hard to play consistently that people playing other characters within the S and A tiers have a decent chance most of the time. This is why the top 10 or so players are so diverse.

As the PM meta advances, we can only pray that it turns out to be like Melee in this regard. But you never know. One character could turn out to be way too OP and dominate the game the way MK does in Brawl. Anything is possible this early. Who would've thought back in 2002 that puff would be one of the best characters in Melee for example?

Zubaztard though D:

Roy is not Marth, that should be apparent to anyone who's played both.

"But the beauty of Melee is that it's slightly less than **** for balance because people haven't caught up with their character yet."
And yet it is already bad enough that every matchup involving the spacies is entirely about the spacie and how the other character handles spacies, whereas, on the spacie's end, it's about just not messing up too drastically. Does anybody have that video of armada and a couple other guys in a car talking about this exact same thing?

We know this game is balanced better than Melee because the team behind it has 12 years of development of Melee's meta and 5 years of development of brawl's to draw on, basic reasoning skills, gameplay experience, and even some history of modding. We know this game is balanced better than Melee because there are already characters that do a better job of making matchups against spacies actually involve them than any character in Melee did against spacies. We've got a good idea that this game is better balanced than melee due to the huge base (even of informed, experienced players) that put a better version of melee ganon at the bottom, a slightly worse version of fox at the top, and 39 other characters fit into a space smaller than that between Melee fox and Melee ganon.

To say that some character could turn out to be "way too OP" or that "We just don't know and can't know yet" really seems to be grasping at straws. There aren't any tremendous surprises to be discovered in PM, every tech or every strategy characters can or will develop will only be incremental in improving their success against other characters. It's not the case with melee where the concept of a platform fighter with heavy emphasis on aerial positioning is a new thing, so a character like jigglypuff is not going to exist when the qualities of good characters are already concepts people have dealt with and understand. And by some oddity it did turn out that way? This game already has an advantage over melee in that it's patchable. No matter the current state of the potential meta, PM has that over melee, and by itself, it's enough to say that PM is in fact better balanced.

No, Melee is still better. Project M is unfinished, unbalanced, and the recovery time is horrible. You can literately win as Link by spamming attacks. Since it isn't finished I can forgive the developers for that. It is fun unlike Brawl. It isn't competitive like it claims to be. Melee wasn't perfect but was far more balanced due to the fact that it is a finished game. It had terrible characters like Pichu.
I never really played Melee, so I can't argue against Melee from experience. However, I disagree with the notion that a finished product is better than an incomplete one. vBrawl was a "finished" product, but was it balanced? The answer is no; the game is unbalanced on both ends of the spectrum. There is an uber tier character and a Hyrule tier. How is Project M not competitive? There isn't a Hyrule tier in this game; Link, Ganondorf, and Zelda are all good. All characters are beatable, and even Fox and Falco have legitimate threats.

I like playing P:M but my heart of hearts tellme it won't be my main game, and Melee( or the upcoming Smash 4)will be.

Used to play Brawl as it's what brought me into the smash community. I loved that game but once I learnt how to get PM working on my PAL Wii my friends and I never looked back. It's taken the best aspects of both games, made so many more characters viable, easy to customise and is overall super fun for both casual and 'hardcore' gamers alike. Project M is undoubtedly my main game.

It's my main game for sure. I burned out on Melee a while back and only play it still because other players around me do.

I most definitely main Project M. I play a bit of Melee on the side and even less Brawl, but I just can't handle how ridiculously unbalanced they are in comparison.

Pm players are cancer, your game is cancer. You melee posers need to stop pretending to play a real game and either be real men and play Melee, or be gay losers and play Brawl. No one is half gay, you either like **** in your mouth or you dont.

Bro.
If you're going to call out the playerbase, then you might as well have the balls to do it on your main account.
You know, instead of being gay.

I only played the game for 2 days and saw that Link is OP (except on turbo mode) so I assumed that this game was unbalanced and that there were several OP characters. I think Link is too fast and attacks too fast as well. I think he was given too many buffs. Brawl is a finished game and is horrible and not fun due to slow game play and horrible balancing. The entire game play of Brawl consists of spamming attacks.
Link is a good character but I don't think he is too strong. All I will say is slow down you have very little experience with the game so take it in at a good pace and don't judge too harshly.

Link's pretty much right in the middle, as most people will tell you. He's got a solid recovery game, but it's extremely technical and only possible if you've got a decent understanding of certain actions. He has the ability to zone other characters easily, but lacks the tools to deal with being pressured up close himself. While safer to use than in Melee, most of his attacks are somewhat unsafe on shield or whiff when compared to other members of the cast. Link's got a lot of strengths in PM, but he retains most of his weaknesses from the previous titles, chiefly in his recovery game and solutions to heavy pressure.

tl;dr you've played for two days, give the game a lot more time than that before you use a phrase like 'OP'. 'OP' is a silly term, we shall not use it here.

I can't see this Nugger dude's posts for some reason. Are block lists a thing on this forum and if so how did I manage to get blocked by someone I have never interacted with here? I consider that an achievement, but still.

My main point, though:
Stop using 'gay' as an insult. It's irritating.

Can't see them too, I think they were all just removed or something, didn't know it was possible. Or I might have been blocked too, which would be weird, unless the guy is going around blocking everyone on the boards.

I'm not sure how seriously I can take two peach mains complaining about spaces making THEM adapt to the character. Seems way too ironic.

Also what is with this influx of toxic new players, rabidly defending communities they aren't even involved in? Throwing "big boy" words like "gay" around wont get you alot around here, maybe you should switch to LOL, or Reddit, maybe you could just come back when you start middle-school.
