Recently I feel like Melee is starting to die out as Project M is becoming more and more popular. This disappoints me, but what are everyone's opinions on this. I'm not too connected to the Smash competitive community, but I would like to know what people think.

Nope. Both games have healthy tournament scenes, and Melee is bigger in many regions. Melee also has support from MLG and EVO, while PM doesn't.

I see what you're saying but I don't think so. PM is just so that way people can play a game like Melee. It's mainly really popular because it's easier to get a hold of. Most people new to the competitive smash don't have melee. So it's easier to just buy Brawl and get PM than buy an actual Melee disk for $80+ dollars. And while that may sound like eventually it will take over, don't forget Smash 4 comes out soon, and while it won't replace Melee it will be the next PM platform, so the entire PM community will start from scratch again almost.

smash4 will not be the pm platform for a long, long time. it took a lot of time and effort for wii-hacking to get to the level that it is now and p:m was not something that sprung up overnight.

considering that the wii-u has been, according some, even more unruly to hack than the wii and that p:m is still being modded/patched as we speak, smash 4 will not be becoming another pm for a very long time, to say the least.

Project M will never get support from major tournament hosting events like MLG as Strong Bad said. Melee will continue to grow, as long as the community supports - which is still growing today. Project M will always be at the side, Smash 4 will be similar to Brawl, but will eventually fall, at least in my eyes.

Project M will NEVER get support from major tournament hosting events like MLG? I wouldn't use a strong word as never. It's unlikely to get support any time soon, but don't count it out as a possibility for the future. A lot of the issue there is licensing reasons and a fear of being shut down by Nintendo, not the fact that it's a mod. So in the future this could change.

Yeah, should've used something else rather than saying 'never'. Thing is though, you're right, the licensing would be quite bad, and I also feel Nintendo of Japan would hate to have Project M at a major tournament. I feel as though Project M is hated by Nintendo of Japan, while Nintendo of America is the complete opposite *cough cough* Reggie saying 'john' *cough cough*.

You're probably right about NOJ hating PM more than NOA, but I don't think either really support it much, at least at the moment. And it could very well be that NOA eventually lightens up to PM but NOJ never does, so PM never showing up at a major tournament, at least on stream, is certainly a possibility. It could be, though, that NOA allows it or NOJ lightens up to it and it does get support, but this is, like we've said, unlikely. I don't think Reggie saying 'john' implies any support of PM, just the competitive community that mostly refers to Melee, since the phrase 'no johns' originated there.

The problem with having P:M at tournaments is primarily Intellectual Property concerns.

Nintendo can't legally stop them from making it anymore due to a legal motion by the EU, but they'll damn well try to keep it from spreading. Otherwise, we'd probably be seeing it more.

I never fully understood what the problem is between Nintendo and PM, but, I think that PM not being as big as Melee has little to do with their rejection of the game. It's more about PM still being in development that turns a lot of people off. It's no fun spending months learning a new mechanic only to find out it's patched out completely later. As the game comes closer to completion, I'm sure the PM install base will grow.

Huh, I never thought about that simple fact. Yeah that's a pretty good point.

There was actually a discussion on a potential "Project M 2" in the SSB4 board.

Most P:M players were against it.

Nintendo would sure love to have their latest released Smash game shown off to loads of people with the game modded to be better. Too bad they didn't make it good initially (The 1st sentence is sarcasm)

A point everyone seems to be ignoring is that in law, if Nintendo showed any indisputable evidence of knowing P:M exists, they'd be legally obliged to C&D it or risk losing their copyright. The legal term for it is called "abandonment" and shows just how much of a dinosaur copyright law is.

So they're quietly letting them coexist. Quietly. While "accidentally" taking a few pointers in some of the characters' properties in SSB4.

(As I remembered PAL P:M doesn't exist, the EU motion I mentioned before doesn't apply, unfortunately.)

Hm, I thought P:M players just wanted Smash 4 to be good enough to not need modded. A lot of people would love an HD Project M.

That and a lot of people think it would be disrespectful to even consider it this early. Brawl was found guilty after years of trial. SSBU hasn't even been called to the stand yet.

Also, there's concerns regarding endangering users' Nintendo Network accounts and, by extension, potentially hundreds of dollars invested into eShop games. That risk wasn't nearly there as much when modding the regular Wii.

Melee is growing here faster than PM and we have more conversions from PM to melee, than vice versa.

Probably just depends on location

Console ban tho
Didn't Zenith get 277 melee entrants and 159 PM ones? Isn't Melee supported by MLG and Zenith? PM isn't taking over any time soon.
