Playing a large portion of the roster will give you more practical knowledge about character's weaknesses and how they can be overcome/ exploited. Playing a smaller portion of the roster will generally make you much better at those specific characters. It's about finding a good balance of both.

Generally, when I play by myself I focus on 4 specific characters (:4luigi:,:4pikachu:,:4kirby:,:4feroy:). When I play with my brother we've basically split the roster so I use more (:4ryu:,:4cloud:,:4drmario:,:4ganondorf:,:4myfriends:,:4metaknight:,:4pacman:,:4palutena:,:4pit:,:4sonic:,:4zelda:,:4zss:, :4falco:)
This is a big reason playing an assortment of characters can be very beneficial, because you gain some experience on how each character functions and you quickly learn the spacing, and ending/start up lag properties of each move of each character that you play.

ALSO. Majority of the time, if you have a good understanding of the fundamentals in Smash you can play any character on a competent level.

I tend to play a lot of different characters because it keeps things from getting stale. Playing a different character other then my mains keeps things fresh and fun for me! :)

I don't mind playing the whole roster, it's fun to know how to play every character and it provides experience on how each character's moves work. I will always be loyal to my mains ganondorf, falco, and roy.

I used to main like 6-7 characters, Fox, Ness, Lucas, Wii Fit, Dedede, R.O.B, and last but not least Sheik.

But now, I main :4wiifit: and :4sheik:, and I pocket :4pit:. These are the Characters that catch my eye in smash, Wii Fit especially, I dropped all the others, because I couldn't handle them all, I felt the 3 I have work best to my play style.

It also might be that I use the Wii U Gamepad as my controller of choice and I'm a scrub who can't play more than 3 characters~

I find that I can play all the characters I use pretty okay, but I do find that there is a massive difference between the ones I have focused time on/ the ones I just play casually. When I went to my first Tournament last weekend I focused on the four characters I put above, but then ventured out into other characters for the friendlies.

Yea, I feel the same way.

Last week I started playing :4mario: on For Glory, just because I wanted to try a different character. I won a few matches and I was brimming with confidence! Then, I was matched up against a player who 2 stocked me without any issue.... I then proceeded to play R.O.B in the next match.. :p

I always like playing different characters in friendly matches because it just makes the games more relaxed and different each time I switch characters.

Competitively it's best to keep it to 1 or 2 characters. One if you're maining a high or top tier. I really don't think hardly any of the top 20 need secondaries with perhaps a handful of specific matchups...like ROB who gets destroyed by ZSS. But if you're facing 60/40 or 65/35 losing matchups I think you're better off just learning those matchups better with your main.

Probably dual main a top or high tier if you main a mid or low tier with some very lopsided matchups.

Three at the very most if you really need a 3rd character for one or two specific matchups that both your other characters are bad against. But I hardly ever think that's ever required. I really don't see any reason to main more than 3 as serious tourney characters. You'll spread yourself too thin.

i think variety is always a good thing, not just for matchups and stuff like that, but its more fun to have different style fighters to use

It's certainly better than being a solo Mario main ever since Smash 64, that's for bloody sure.

It is one thing to be good at one characyer, but it is another to be able to be good at a lot of characters. Matchups are important but in the end the better player takes it.
